Galeri Numismatik

If you're Malaysia coin and banknote collector, Sasana Kijang Bank Negara is a must visit place for you. They have a large numismatic collection of Malaysia coinage in their Galeri Numismatik (Numismatic Gallery). I had been waiting for the BNM money museum visit since early this year. It took me over 2 long hours to browse at all coins and banknotes collection that they have. That 2 long hours not enough since I actually missed on some of the collections on display by mistake. I will most probably go there again. Currently, they're less people coming to the Sasana Kijang. It helps me to look at all the collections without any interruption.

Galeri numismatik
coin display

The "Galeri Numismatik" is located on the second floor of the visitor building. The gallery is a little bit dark maybe to conserve daily energy used and to help you look at the collections better. You will be greeted by BNM Barter Trade game once you enter the starting gate. Its need two persons to play the game and it teach you how hard it is to do barter trade instead of exchange money. Nobody in the gallery during my visit that day. I try to play the game alone but I then realized this is not what I am coming for.

Terengganu Pitis
kijang emas

They display their collections according to the earliest coinage in Malaysia history. You get to see the vast collection of early Malay coinage from Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perak, Melaka and also Sabah (British North Borneo) & Sarawak coins. Most of their Malay Sultanate collection are something that I never seen before in my life. You also get to see The famous Kelantan Gold Kupang, the kijang coin which is used as a BNM logo. The BNM logo idea suggested by the late Malaysia Bank governor Tun Ismail Mohd. Ali.

What I don't understand about the gallery viewing is the purpose of the coin slide on the wall. For me who like coin collection, the slide is just a distraction when it move while I look at the actual coin. Maybe I will suggest a few ideas on how to improve the numismatic viewing experience in your gallery BNM? Will write about it later.

In the gallery, you also get to see almost complete set of Malaysia commemorative coins collection since 1967 and the latest. All the coins are display on a wall but I think they're some problem viewing them for the coins on the lower wall. You need to crouch to look at the coins. It will be helpful if BNM can arrange them according to human standing eyes level. But maybe they have a kids on their mind when they're preparing the Malaysia coins commemorative wall.

You also get to see all Malaysia banknote designs and variety in this gallery, from RM1 notes until the obsolete RM1000 notes. Most of the notes are just specimen notes. I were hoping to see the Malaysia 1st series A1 bankotes but they don't display it in here. You can also see some pattern notes of Malaya & British Borneo and also Malaysia. Some of the design is far much better then the current Malaysia banknotes. They're also Tun Ismail Mohd. Ali signature plate on display and an old RM100 notes that had been signed & approved by Malaysia Finance Minister.

If you like numismatic, 2 hours not enough for you to visit and look at all the collections in here. A Facebook friend of mine had gone to the Numismatic gallery almost all days since its opening. A highly recommended place for Malaysia coin and banknote collector. Rumours about the new gallery as one with largest currency collection is not true though but it do have almost complete collection of Malaysia coinage history.

For more pictures of the new BNM money museum, you can visit my Facebook album; Sasana Kijang-2nd Floor-Galeri Numismatik.

GOLD to go China

GOLD to go China has been installed recently in a busy shopping district in Beijing. GOLD to go is a gold vending machine produce by a German company, Ex Oriente Lux AG. The exterior of the machine is coated with a thin layer of gold and offers customers 320 items to choose from, ranging from 24-carat gold bars weighing 1, 5, and 10 grams as well as gold coins from Canada, Australia, and South Africa. Each comes in a gift box. Shoppers in the popular Wangfujing Street can insert cash or use a bank card to withdraw gold bars or coins of various weights based on market prices, the People's Daily said on its website. Each withdrawal is capped at 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) or one million yuan (about $156,500) worth of gold, the report said.

China gold vending machine

Gold vending machines already exist in Britain, the United States, the Middle East and Europe.
The machine was launched Saturday by the Beijing Agricultural Commercial Bank and a gold trading company, the report said. They plan to install an unspecified number of machines in secure locations such as gold shops and upmarket private clubs.

Gold is often used as a hedge against inflation and the machines could prove popular among Chinese consumers looking for a convenient way to safeguard their cash amid rising prices.
Chinese consumer demand for gold soared 27 percent year-on-year to 579.5 tonnes in 2010, according to the World Gold Council. China is the world's second largest bullion consumer after India.

Source: AFP.

China Daily reported that the ATM dispensing gold bars and coins was switched on this weekend and then swiftly switched back off again. The vending machine shut down the same day because it was not producing receipts. No specific date when the ATM machine will be running again by Gongmei Gold Trading, the gold ATM Operator in China.

In the future, will this vending machine be available in Malaysia?

Sasana Kijang Bank Negara

Sasana Kijang located at Jalan Dato Onn, Kuala Lumpur, just beside Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) headquarters. For address, maps and complete information about its location, you can read my post; Sasana Kijang location. This post is a series of posts about the new BNM building. Thank you to BNM for their generosity on providing information relating to numismatic with the new Numismatic gallery. In my visit that day only a small crowd are coming to visit that museum. Maybe because not many people know about the new place.

Sasana Kijang
bnm museum
architecture

When I drive to Sasana Kijang, I don't see any road signboard that can provide information for that place location. It will be hard for people who don't really familiar with Kuala Lumpur road but the easy way is to find Memorial Tun Hussien Onn, the building is just beside that memorial. If you parked on LG4, the lifts will bring you straight to lobby. The lift to the visiting floors a little bit weird for me. I can only see the letter "G" and only realized that it is a lift when I saw people coming out from that thing. They're four floor for visitor but currently the first floor still not finish yet.

Sasana Cafe

On the Ground Floor, you can find Cafe and Gift Shop. This is the last place I visit that day but a must visit for every visitor. The cafe look exclusive but the food price are cheaper then 3 star hotel with a 5 star hotel food. The sardine curry puff in the picture make me want to visit Sasana Kijang again. On that day, I buy this curry puff twice for take away because of the delicious taste that I cannot find in other place. The price is only RM2 a piece. When you visit this place, Please don't forget try eating in their cafe. Thank you for the cheap but delicious food BNM.

In the gift shop, you can buy gift related to numismatic and also T-Shirt, Necklaces, bracelets, bookmark. You also get to view gold leaf banknotes on display in the shop. Some of the Numismatic item you can buy include Malaysia new 3rd series coins commemorative folder, Malaysia 2nd series coins, Sukan Komanwel 98 commemorative banknote, "Malaysia Numismatic Heritage" book and "Kedah & Perlis Currency Heritage" book. They're also some books related to painting/batik and painting collection of BNM. I suggest this shop sell Steven Tan catalog in the future, to help non collector buying books related to Malaysia numismatic.

Malaysia Numismatic Society auction 149

Yesterday, Malaysia Numismatic Society (MNS) held an auction at Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Malaysia National Museum, Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysia Numismatic Society auction 149 is not a crowded one, less people coming maybe because of the recent Hari Raya Celebration. I came early at 8.40 am because last time when I came at 9.00 am, most of the item on sale at the bourse tables are already gone. This time, I can only see 6 sellers joining the bourse tables with most of them are selling Malaysia banknote. They bring a very nice collection but with a high price though. This is the first time I am not buying anything on the auction day.

The viewing item start at around 9.30 am. All members got to view the auction but not allowed to touch the coins or notes. Some of the MNS committee act as a security preventing members from damaging the items. Most crowd are more interested on item no. 59, Malaysia 1 sen 1976 copper Brilliant Uncirculated. The recent Mavin International Auction, Singapore on 16 July 2011, 1 sen 1976 copper has been closed at a high price, SGD1,400 (excluding tax and commision). Many members want to know if the same item can get a higher price in MNS Auction compare to the Mavin auction. Steven Tan catalog reported only 100 pieces of this coin exist.

crowd joining the auction

The auction start at 10.25am with MNS president Mr. Thenakaran Nadarajah himself as a auctioneer. Mr. Lawrence De Souza act as a bidder for mail bidders. There are only around 30 members of the society who participated in the bidding process. Most of the items on auction come home without any bidder, although Mr. Thena asked members few times if they want to bid for the items. Most of the item reserve price are below the market price. When the time come for item no.59, many members join the bidding. process(Saran Singh, Dickson Niew etc). Its like a battle for the 1976 1 sen copper. In the end, a bidder won the coin at RM3600. A little bit lower then everyone expected (RM4000).

1 sen copper 1976

Its a fun auction day for all MNS members. Some of my Facebook friends won their auction at reserve price, congratulations to them. If you remember about that two little kids that I had been talking in the last MNS auction no. 143, they're still coming and joining this auction. Hopefully more younger generation will keep on joining coin collecting as a hobbies. The MNS Auction participant has been decreasing each time, some changes has to be done if MNS want their auction to be popular again. You can read my old posts about these matter.

Oldest coin in your collection

What is the oldest coin in your collection? I and some friends in Facebook are having a discussion about this, early this morning. Sometimes we just collect our coins without even look back at them. I asked my friends the same question "duit tahun berapakah yang paling lama dlm simpanan anda?" (Malay language), to just create small coin talk in their new Facebook group. I am the one who asked the question but exactly, I don't check what is the oldest coins of mine. I just answer VOC coin 1735 as my oldest coin. VOC stand for Dutch East India Company (V.O.C., Verenidge Oostindische Compagnie).

Dutch coin

What is the oldest coin in my collection? This afternoon, I check my VOC collection again, I can only found 1737 VOC. Old coin doesn't mean the value is high. I only bought this coin at RM15 from a friend in Penang. He is selling them cheap because a metal detecting guy from Melaka sold to him in bulk at a very cheap price. I also have a Silver Hollandia silver coin, 2 stuivers year 1722. One side has the name in three lines above the date, with two dots and a rosette on the top. The other side has a crowned shield with a standing lion facing left, with "2" on the left and "S" on the right.

Silver Hollandia stuivers

Sekeping East India Company

I also have many Malacca Portuguese coins but most of the coins don't show any date on it but the coin is older then my VOC coin. I also have sekeping East India company copper coin dated 1786. Its younger then the 1737 VOC coin but I bought it for RM300. I bought this coin by mistake. I am looking for Penang B. Balemark series of coin at that time. I only realized that this is not the coin I am looking for after checking my catalog.

What about you? What is your oldest coin in your possession/collection? Go to my new Facebook page and share your collection pictures on the wall. I will share it in the new album that I create; Oldest coin collection. Just make sure your coin related to Malaysia and not a fantasy coin like duit yassin etc.

20 sen 2002 get RM2000

20 sen 2002 can get RM2000 if you change it at the nearest bank? That sound like a good thing for everyone. Go and check your piggy bank who know you have plenty of 20 sen coins but before you break that piggy bank, make sure you read this, that is just a hoax/lie. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) share a Facebook notes statements that they have receive many questions and inquiries about this matter. This is untrue and baseless.

20 sen 2002

Original BNM Statement:

I think this issue is similar with the story of RM50 Merdeka can get you double value if you change it at BNM. You can read all about it in my post; tukar duit lama di BNM. Many Malaysian create fantasy story about Malaysia coins and banknotes. I still have readers email or sms me about sa-puloh ringgit with Agong watermark. To all people who want to double their money, why not buy Malaysia commemorative coin and banknote, I had done that and so far, I had double my money when I sell them few years later. You can join me and many of my collector friends in facebook too; Malaysia Coin Facebook page.

Museum of History Ethnography Melaka

I had been visiting Museum of History, Ethnography & literature Melaka last year. The museum located in the red Stadhuys, at the junction of City Road and Church Street, Malacca. You can see the 'Dutch Square' infront of the building full of tourists all the time. The Dutch Square is Victorian Water Fountain and Tan Beng Seng Clock Tower built in 1886. Stadthuys (" town hall "in Dutch) were built in 1650 as an official settlement of the Dutch Governor and Deputy Governor, in which these structures represent the fine art of Dutch design.

Muzium Melaka

red Stadhuys

The museum open everyday (including Public Holidays) with a fee of RM5.00 for adults and RM2.00 for Children. It open from 9am until 5.30pm on weekdays and from 9am until 9pm on Saturday & Sunday. Museum of History is located on level two and Museum of Ethnografi is located on level one in the Stadthuys Building. If you love history and looking at old things like me, you have to spend 2 hours to visit this museum.

Museum of History is located at the level of a display of the scene that became the cornerstone of Malaysia's history starts from the opening day of Malacca to the Portuguese colonial era, Dutch, English, Japanese until the country achieved independence. Ethnografi Museum gives special attention to the lifestyle of local communities of diverse races Malay, Chinese, Indian, Baba Nyonya, Chetti and Portuguese. Malacca govt reply on treasure theft

Malacca govt reply on treasure theft: they will seek the assistance of the police here to monitor and act against relic hunters who have been selling priceless artifacts excavated from the Malacca River. Star news reported State Tourism, Culture and Heritage committee deputy chairman Chua Kheng Hwa said the state government would rope in several other agencies, including the Heritage Department, to prevent further plundering of the nation's treasure.

Malacca ancient treasure

“I don't know how the looting went undetected as agents of the scrap metal dealers have been combing the riverbank since early last month,” he said.

“We will lodge a police report to stop them from taking away more of these artifacts.”

On Wednesday, The Star reported that agents of scrap metal dealers had been selling old Portuguese coins, bullets and religious amulets that were unearthed during a recent landslip along the banks of the Malacca River to antique brokers from Singapore. (You can read it here: Ancient treasure found and sold)

The artifacts were discovered after an ancient jetty at Stadhuys collapsed in May.

Chua added that he had also informed the state Heritage Department to immediately monitor the situation.

“I will also table a proposal to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam to conduct a study and do excavation work as probably more treasure is buried underneath this ancient waterway,” he said.

“We need archaeologists, including foreign experts, to study the relics.”

At the peak of the Malacca Sultanate and when Malacca port was colonized by the Portuguese and Dutch, the river would have seen trading vessels from various countries, some of which could have capsized.

In an immediate response, Malacca police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the police would render full assistance to the state government to safeguard the national heritage.

“Marine police will be dispatched to patrol the river stretch,” he said.

Meanwhile, a check revealed that no digging activities were being carried out.

Source: The Star.

I do think they don't know where are the exact place the relic hunters get the treasure. I had read some blog by Malacca metal detecting enthusiast that you can easily get treasure from Malacca beaches. Just make sure you bring the right metal detecting devices and do the hunting at a beach with less people around. They are also possibilites that the relic hunters found the ancient treasures from dozens of shipwrecks off the Tanjung Tuan coast. On May this year, the state government announced a billion-ringgit offer to salvage companies to retrieve treasures from sunken ships along the Malacca coastline. Why the salvage companies need to share their finding/money when they can retrieve the treasures them self with no action by authority. They keep on talking but no action taken so far.

Have you read a news in The Star today, Ancient treasure found and sold in Melaka. I think a news about people unearthed old Portuguese coins, bullets and religious amulets along the banks of the Malacca River had long been stop by the authority but look like nobody done nothing. From the news, sound like we can enjoy a free coin hunting along the Malacca River banks without any interruption by the museum authority. In the news, a scrap metal agent, Rafi, share that the most valuable of which found so far was a cannon ball that fetched RM500, were discovered after an ancient jetty at Stadhuys collapsed in May.

They also found Chinese porcelain pieces and religious paraphernalia from the Malacca Sultanate as well as those from the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial periods. The artefacts are believed to be about 500 years old.

“Also unearthed were bullets and cannons. For the past few days, I have joined six others in combing the river sediment for treasure," Rafi said.

“We have hit the jackpot! There are piles of these artefacts for our picking,” he said, adding that he made about RM1,000 a day by selling the items. Apparently, the brokers are from Singapore.

At the peak of the Malacca Sultanate and when the port was colonised by the Portuguese and Dutch, the river would have seen trading vessels from various countries, some of which could have capsized with their treasures.

Rafi said he was only armed with a ladle and hoe for his search, adding that although the relevant authorities “were aware of the find, nobody had stopped them from digging”.

“I know we should not sell these items but the offer is too tempting,” he said.

“We found mostly items from the Portuguese era. Despite being 500 years old, the coins are well-preserved with their carvings still visible. We have also discovered coins used by the Dutch East India Company.”

Expressing his regret that no effort was made to preserve these historical items, Portuguese-Eurasian Association president Michael Singho said it was ready to buy the artefacts and conserve them at their settlement in Ujong Pasir here.

“I will embark on a fund-raising drive to obtain the items back,” he said.

State Tourism, Culture and Heritage Committee deputy chairman Chua Kheng Hwa said he would bring up the discovery to Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Ali Rustam.

“The items are supposed to be handed over to the museum authority but these people are only interested in making a fast buck.”
