The People's Bank of China will release a total of 16 kind of gold and silver commemorative coins for the coming Year of the Horse on 10 October 2013. 16 legal tender gold (9) and silver (7) coins will be release with face values ranging from 10 yuan to 100,000 yuan. The highest denomination 100,000-yuan coin will have a small mintage, 18 pieces.

The coins obverse design shows China national emblem, the auspicious patterns, country name, and year. The coins reverse design for 12 coins are the running horse, the decorative horse head design, the face value and the Chinese characters of “甲午（pronunciation: Jia wu）. The reverse design for four coins are the traditional horse design, the auspicious patterns (with partial color), the face value, and the Chinese characters of “甲午（Jia Wu）”.
The coins are minted by Shenzhen Mint, Shenyang Mint and Shanghai Mint, and franchised by China Gold Coin Incorporation.
