Online Ordering Facility for BNM Commemorative Currencies

Yesterday, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) announced the availability of the online ordering facility for the sale of commemorative currencies issued by BNM. Members of the public can place their orders from 29 December 2017 until 19 January 2018 at 1.00 p.m.

The online ordering facility for the sale of:

• 60th Anniversary of the Signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement banknote
• The installation of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV coins
• The 60th Anniversary of National Archives of Malaysia coins

Members of the public can place their orders at https://duit.bnm.gov.my from 29 December 2017 until 19 January 2018 at 1.00 p.m.

Members of the public are also advised to place their orders through the BNM online system and not with any other party or unauthorised ordering facilities.

To provide for fair distribution, there will be a purchase limit for each buyer, as follows:

Results will be announced on 25 January 2018 at www.bnm.gov.my and at Bank Negara Malaysia’s Museum and Art Gallery and the Bank’s offices in Pulau Pinang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Terengganu.

In the event of oversubscription, balloting will be undertaken. All orders will be considered and there is no preference given to orders based on order date and time.

Successful buyers can pay for and collect their orders in two phases as follows:

New Malaysia RM600 banknote break Guinness record?

Yesterday, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is issuing a RM600 commemorative banknotes in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the Signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement. The size of the banknote is 22 x 37 cm.

Its official, Malaysia RM600 is the current world largest legal banknote.

These banknotes commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement signing in the year 1957. The commemorative banknotes honour the Council (later called Conference) of Rulers’ contribution towards the realisation of the Nation’s independence on 31 August 1957. The Agreement dated 5 August 1957 proclaiming the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the Supreme Head of the Federation was signed by the Malay Council of Rulers from Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Terengganu with Sir Donald MacGillivray, the High Commissioner of the Federation of Malaya who represented Queen Elizabeth II. The Agreement became a historical constitutional evidence for the independence of the Federation of Malaya.

The design is based on the theme of “Raja Payung Kedaulatan Negara”. These commemorative banknotes are the first commemorative banknotes printed by Bank Negara Malaysia on the composite substrate, a combination of polymer and paper substrate, which offers higher security features and longer life span. These banknotes are printed larger in size, based on its face value.

According to Guiness Book of world Records website, previous record holder for world largest legal tender banknote is a 100,000 Philippine piso banknote issued on 22 May 1998 by the Central Bank of Manila.

The 100,000 piso banknote measuring 22 x 33 cm (8 ½ x 11 in) is printed by Giesecke Devrient of Munich, Germany. Only 1,000 pieces were issued to commemorate The Centennial of Philippine Independence in 1998. The record holder is Giesecke Devrient, GMBH; place in Munich, Germany and the record were made on 22 May 1998.

If you look at the specifications information provided by BNM press release, the new RM600 banknote is 4cm longer compare to the current record holder.

• Malaysia 600 Ringgit banknote (22 x 37 cm)
• 100,000 Philippine piso banknote (22 x 33 cm)

Looking at the numbers given, new Malaysia RM600 banknote is a clear winner but BNM or the banknote printer need to apply to be in the Guiness Book of world Records and some charges may apply.

So far there is no official information about which company print the new Malaysia RM600 banknote.

Hopefully this time Malaysia Numismatic can break the world record and BNM or the banknote printer will apply to Guiness Book of world Records for the new RM600 Merdeka banknote to be the new World largest legal tender banknote.

Agong XV commemorative coins launched today

Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative coins in conjunction with the installation of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV Sultan Muhammad V as the fifteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The commemorative coins were presented to His Majesty today by the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, Muhammad bin Ibrahim, FCB, at Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia.

His Majesty was elected as the fifteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five year term, by the Malay Rulers at the 243rd Conference of Rulers (Special Meeting) at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur on 14 October 2016. His Majesty subsequently took the oath as the fifteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 13 December 2016 at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. The installation of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV Sultan Muhammad V as the fifteenth Yang di-Pertuan Agong was held on 24 April 2017.

The portrait of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV Sultan Muhammad V, is featured at the centre of the coin. The words "KEBAWAH DULI YANG MAHA MULIA SERI PADUKA BAGINDA YANG DI-PERTUAN AGONG XV SULTAN MUHAMMAD V" are inscribed along the circumference of the coin with the date of the installation depicted at the bottom of the portrait of His Majesty.

The centre of the coin depicts the image of the official royal insignia of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV Sultan Muhammad V. The name “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” as the issuing authority of the commemorative coins is featured on the upper circumference of the coin, while the words “PERTABALAN SERI PADUKA BAGINDA YANG DI-PERTUAN AGONG XV” are inscribed at the lower circumference of the coin together with the respective face value of the coin.

Specifications of the commemorative coins are as follows:

Gold Commemorative Coin (proof)

This proof coin is made of gold with 999.9 purity and weighs 7.96 grams with a face value of RM300. The coins will be sold via public auction at a reserve price of RM4,000 a piece. The mintage quantity is 300 pieces.

Coloured Silver Commemorative Coin (proof like)

This proof-like coloured coin is made of fine silver with 99.9 purity and weighs 92.0 grams. It has a face value of RM150 and will be sold at RM1,000 a piece. The mintage quantity is 500 pieces.

Copper Commemorative Coin (matte finish)

This matte finish coin is made of pure copper with 99.9 purity and weighs 77.76 grams. It has a face value of RM15 and will be sold at RM200 a piece. The mintage quantity is 500 pieces.

Nordic Gold Brilliant Uncirculated (B.U) Commemorative Coin

The Nordic Gold (B.U) coin has a face value of RM1 and will be sold at RM11 a piece. The mintage quantity is 15,000 pieces.

500 units of sets of 2 priced at RM1,200 per set are also available comprising one proof-like coloured silver and one matte finish copper coins.

Agong launched 60 years Merdeka commemorative banknotes

Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative banknotes in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the Signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement. These commemorative banknotes were launched by His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV Sultan Muhammad V at the Museum and Art Gallery, Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

These banknotes commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement signing in the year 1957. The reverse design features the portraits of the nine rulers signing the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement on 5 August 1957. These banknotes are decorated with prominent independence and post-independence figures and features. On the right-hand side of the banknote is the triumphant silhouette of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the architect of Malayan independence and the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. Imprinted on the background are four significant landmarks: the National Palace, Perdana Putra, the Parliament building and the Palace of Justice. These reflect the four pillars of the nation: the institution of the Monarchy, the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary respectively.

National Archives coins launched today

Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative coins in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of National Archives of Malaysia on 4 December 2017. The commemorative coins were launched by Datuk Azemi Abdul Aziz, Director General of National Archives of Malaysia today.

The words 60th ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF MALAYSIA is depicted clockwise on half the circumference of the coin. The orange and gold coloured anniversary logo at the centre of the coin represents the celebration of the National Archives of Malaysia’s diamond jubilee.

The image at the centre of the coin depicts the logo of National Archives of Malaysia where pieces of paper are stacked together, representing national documents and records. The star in the middle of the paper signifies the star of the national flag, a symbol of Malaysian unity. The words Arkib Negara Malaysia in both roman and jawi script encircling the Archive’s logo show their responsibility in safekeeping the national documents and records. Sixty dentils inscribed along the coin represent the Archive’s 60 years of establishment. The name “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” as the issuing authority of the commemorative coins is featured on the upper circumference of the coin, while the face value of the coin is depicted at the lower circumference of the coin.

2017 SEA Games coins order result

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has just announced order result for Commemorative Coins in Conjunction with 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games. According to their press release, BNM received orders from more than 2,000 interested buyers, four times more than the previous sale.

On 29 August 2017, in conjunction with the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games, BNM have announced public can place their orders for 2017 SEA Games commemorative coins via email to commorder@bnm.gov.my or via order forms available at Bank Negara Malaysia’s Museum and Art Gallery and the Bank’s offices in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Terengganu.

This was to ensure greater convenience for members of the public to purchase these limited edition coins and to provide a fairer opportunity to more buyers nationwide. The online ordering was part of a new pre-ordering process where members of the public were able to order online via email and through the Bank’s offices nationwide.

The Bank also introduced a new computer-aided balloting process for oversubscribed coins. The ordering and balloting exercise was witnessed by the Bank’s internal auditors for process integrity.

The Bank has also extended the collection period to allow successful buyers to pay for and collect the commemorative coins at their convenience. Successful buyers may do so from 8 to 12 September 2017 at Bank Negara Malaysia’s Museum and Art Gallery (daily, including on weekends and public holidays) and at the Bank’s offices in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Terengganu (normal working days).

Buyers have to present valid identification in person for collection (e.g. MyKad for Malaysians/ Passport for non-Malaysians). Coins which are not collected by 4.00 p.m. on 12 September 2017 will be offered to buyers in the ballot reserve list. Retail sale of the Nordic Gold coins will be available at Bank Negara Malaysia’s Museum and Art Gallery from 13 September 2017 onwards.

2017 SEA games coins launched by BNM

Today, YB Datuk M. Saravanan, Deputy Minister of Youth & Sports launched commemorative coins in conjunction with the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games. The coins will be available for sale from Tuesday, 29 August 2017. Further information on the sale will be informed to the public in a press release prior to the sale date.

The official mascot of the Games named RIMAU is inspired by the graceful and powerful Malayan Tiger. RIMAU stands for Respect, Integrity, Move, Attitude and Unity. The words “BANGKIT BERSAMA” is the theme of the Games which signifies the coming of age for Southeast Asia as a community. The words “SUKAN SEA KE-29” and “SUKAN PARA ASEAN KE-9” is depicted on the upper and lower circumference of the coin.

The words “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” as the issuing authority of the commemorative coin is featured on the upper circumference of the coin, while the face value of the coin is inscribed on the lower circumference. The centre of the coin features the official logo of the Games which is the Wau Bulan, while the combination of stripes and shards of colour is collated from the flags of all Southeast Asian countries.
