2nd edition Hong Kong & Macau Numismatic Reference Book

The latest 2nd Edition of Hong Kong & Macau 1846-2017 Numismatic Reference book has been released during "Trigo Kuala Lumpur International Money Show" on 17 March 2017. According to Trigometric Sdn Bhd, only 5,000 copies of the 2nd edition book printed and most of the copies are for China, Hong Kong and Macau market.

The book editor is Master Sifu K.N. Boon from Trigometric Sdn Bhd and it is also used as a reference book by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Market prices written in the book is based on the Hong Kong dollar not Malaysia Ringgit.

The 2nd edition encyclopedia starts with a brief introduction about Rubber industry in Malaya, Ceylon & Netherlands East Indies. The rubber industry in Malaya started by Henry Nicholas Ridley and the earliest rubber estate in Malaya is the Bukit Lintang Rubber Estate established in 1896 in Malacca. Interestingly, Saran Singh's father, Dhan Singh is one of the person who established The Guru Nanak Estate in Batu Sembilan, Ulu Langat, Selangor in 1910.

This is followed by discussions about how Rubber Export Coupons were introduced by The British Government under the "Stevenson Plan" commenced on the 1st November, 1922. The Committee final decision was to restrict the export of raw rubber sheet from all British possesions (Ceylon & Malaya). Under the plan, coupons stipulating a weight of rubber were to be issued. The design and printing of Malaya Dry Rubber Export Coupons done by the Survey Department, Federated Malaya States at it's premises in Java Street (Jalan Mountbatten) or later known as Jalan Tun Perak.

The book also share a list of people associated with the Rubber industry in Malaya, this includes Controllers of Rubber, Directors of the Rubber Research Institute of Malaya (RRIM) and Surveyor General in Survey Department. The book introduction end with "The Story of Rubber in Photograph", a collection of black and white pictures of how the Rubber plantation look like during those days.

On 22 September 2016, Master Sifu Steven Tan latest catalogue, Standard Catalogue Of Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei Coin & Paper Money 22nd edition has been released by International Stamp & Coin Sdn Bhd. Pitis Timah Kelantan-Tin Coins of Kelantan

Rusdi Jusoh publish his 2nd book "Pitis Timah Kelantan-Tin Coins of Kelantan" on 28 August 2016. The 33 pages book talk about Kelantan Pitis coins and the coins variety. The book publish by Rusdi Jusoh own company, Purbawan Enterprise (Purbawan Numismatic Gallery).

In my opinion, this book is a small catalogue of Kelantan Pitis coins with a complete pictures of each varieties. They are only 11 Kelantan Pitis coins included in this book with 43 coin varieties. Rusdi Jusoh categorize Kelantan Pitis coins into 11 categories and 2 parts (with KELANTAN word and without KELANTAN word). This book written in Malay and I am not sure if any English book available.

What interesting about this black & white book is the way the author teaches readers to recognize Kelantan Pitis coins. He use his own special catalogue number (Purbawan code P#). In my opinion, his catalogue number make it easy to understand about the coin variety and coin design as well.

The book printed by the publisher using lasetjet printer and 128g art paper. For me, it is worth it since the publisher sale this book for RM15 (including Pos xpress postage) and you only need to add RM10 for extra copy. However, for those of you who want to buy this book, it has been sold out recently.

The only mistake we found are they are some coins without their weight and diameter size in the book. Hopefully, Rusdi Jusoh also make an English version of this book in the near future.

On 19 June 2016, KN Boon 8th edition book, 1786-2016 Malaysia, Brunei & Singapore, Banknotes & Coins officially have been released for collectors. This is not just a numismatic reference book but consider as a collectible items for numismatic collectors.

Last year, most collectors bought at least 2 copies of the KN Boon 7th edition book, one for their everyday reference and one for their collectible item collection.

A must have numismatic book for Malaysia banknotes and coins collectors, this new edition is 616 pages thick compare to the previous edition 496 pages.

47 pages of the much awaited Malaya Rubber export coupons section has been added in the book. At least 87 new catalog numbers has been added for Malaya Rubber export coupons. They are many unlisted Malaya Rubber export coupons added in this catalog including some of the proof and specimen coupons. Many Malaya Rubber export coupons before 1940 added in the book, some of them I have never seen before.

I should add, according to my interview with Trigometric today, most of the images for Malaya Rubber export coupons taken by Master Sifu KN Boon himself. In my opinion, images taken were very good, the color display in the book for the Malaya Rubber export coupons is the same as the original coupons.

Most of the coupons added in the books own by collectors, you can read about it in the image reference section, at the back of the book.

Trigometric told me there was little mistake in printing for page 301, the 25 katis normal coupon image is added in the page instead of the 25 katis Specimen coupon image.

Maybe in the new edition, the information for the coupons printers are added in the future catalog.

Another new section is private estate currency, Loke Yew estate. Four (4) denominations of the token notes, printed by Waterlow & Sons added in the book.

For Malaysia coins, they manage to add the latest Yayasan Sabah Commemorative coins in the catalog. For Malaysia circulation coins, they are still no updated mintage provided by Bank Negara Malaysia.

For this new edition book, the picture of Malaysia banknotes are without the signature of the governor and the words "WANG KERTAS INI SAH DIPERLAKUKAN DENGAN NILAI". It is directive of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) that Trigometric Sdn Bhd need to comply to get approval from BNM.

They put the signature of the governor below the title of the banknote series.

KN Boon 8th edition book will be out in 2 weeks

KN Boon new book, 1786-2016 Malaysia, Brunei & Singapore Banknotes & Coins 8th edition will be out in 2 weeks time or at least by end of June. The previous KN Boon 7th edition book has been sold out one year after its release.

The new 8th edition will have 620 pages compare to the old one 496 pages, a lot thicker and heavier then the previous edition.

A lot of new items will be added in the book especially the much awaited Malaya Rubber Coupons section. Some unlisted rubber coupons will be added in the new book and all coupons will be in full colour.

There will also be many never before seen specimen and trial banknotes which will be added in the new book. The Malaysia 1966 unissued, unrecorded, uniface trial Pattern Coins will also be feature in the new book.

If you have their Trigometric Auction 3 catalogue, you may have noticed they have changed the design of their book cover. They put a picture of a fishermen village taken from a 10 dollars Straits Settlements banknotes as their main book cover image.

Today, Dickson Niew post a photos of a list of Rubber Export Coupons photographs wanted by Master Sifu Saran Singh for his new book about Malaya Rubber Export Coupons. For your information, Rubber Export Coupons introduced by The British Government after World War I, when the Malayan Rubber industry suffered from over production in a market of lower demand. The Rubber Growers Association, which represented estate interests in Malaya, began to urge the British Government to intervene, and eventually the "Stevenson Plan" commenced on the 1st November, 1922. Under the plan, coupons stipulating a weight of rubber were to be issued. A planter could not export more rubber than the total "face weight" of coupons held by him.

Kolbe & Fanning April 16 Numismatic Book sale

Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers have announced that their next online numismatic book auction will take place on Saturday, April 16, beginning at 11:30 a.m., eastern time.

The April 16 auction is the latest in Kolbe & Fanning’s series of smaller online numismatic book auctions held by the firm in addition to their traditional printed-catalogue sales and public auctions.

Lost and Found Coin Hoards and Treasures

On 27 October 2015, Whitman Publishing release a new book "Lost and Found Coin Hoards and Treasures: Illustrated Stories of the Greatest American Troves and Their Discoveries," by Q. David Bowers.

"Banknotes of British Malaya: The Frank Goon Collection, 2nd Edition" has been released by Spink on 15th of August 2015 during International World Stamp Exhibition held in Singapore on the 14th - 19th August 2015.

Frank Goon 2nd edition will be released next week

This post is just a reminder to all my numismatic friends, on 15th of August, Spink will launch the 2nd edition of the Frank Goon book during International World Stamp Exhibition to be held in Singapore on the 14th - 19th August 2015. I am not sure how much the price will be but I am sure it will be much more expensive based on the low exchange rate of the Ringgit to Singapore Dollar.

100 Greatest Women on Coins

Whitman Publishing announced a "100 Greatest Women on Coins" book will be available in September 2015, the 10th entry in Whitman Publishing’s popular “100 Greatest” library. The coffee-table size book is in full color, with photographs and stories for every coin.

Type Three Double Eagles 1877-1907 Book

A new new reference book "Type Three Double Eagles 1877 - 1907," written by Michael Fuljenz has been published by Subterfuge Publishing. The reference book about a popular and historic United States gold coins series provides useful information for gold coin collectors and investors, a date-by-date analysis of every coin in the series, historical vignettes and more than 100 full-color photographs.

The book was written by Michael Fuljenz, President of Universal Coin & Bullion Ltd. in Beaumont, Texas, who has won more than 50 awards from the Numismatic Literary Guild for his consumer protection and education newsletters and earlier books and articles.

Fuljenz predicts that last year's wide-spread publicity about the discovery of the buried treasure Saddle Ridge Hoard "should increase collector and investor interest in this (coin) series for a long time." The vast majority of the 1,427 gold coins unearthed in the $10 million Northern California hoard were U.S. Type Three Double Eagles.

Fuljenz provides useful collecting, investing, buying and selling tips as well as historical information and price history about this coin series.
