Unwanted NZ$100 note get NZ$5,150 offer

Unwanted gift of a New Zealand $100 banknote has attracted more than 50,000 page views, prompted mixed feedback and a NZ$5,150 offer. Robbie Shefford, of Ashburton in Canterbury, listed his "unwanted gift" of $100 on Boxing Day "to have a laugh".

Unwanted gift

"Yeah no just purely taking the piss. I was having a chat with my brother about how people start selling their unwanted gifts after Christmas and we thought wouldn't it be funny if someone put up money."

Since he posted it on Saturday the $100 note has attracted more than 50,000 page views and prompted mixed feedback.

"Most people I think get my sense of humour. Others have got no idea what's going on and are essentially sending me a lot of f-words. There's a lot of questions I can't publish. They're either very silly or drive a Kenworth."

Shefford said he initially thought he would lose money. And he said he had "no idea" what he would spend the potential profits on.

"I don't expect anyone to follow through with it anyway. If they do they need their head read."

Trade Me spokesman Logan Mudge said the sale would be honoured like any other approved listing.

"If someone was to pay over and above the cash value of the item, as per our rules you are legally required to complete it. If he wins it, good luck to him, it's a bit of a laugh."

Mudge said it was "definitely a one off" to see the sale of currency that wasn't a collector's item.

"This one is perhaps someone having a bit of a laugh and may be poking a little bit of fun at this unwanted gift craze."

Trade Me says the outlandish offers - including some of more than $5,000 - have been removed.

Bidding on the $100 note closes on Saturday January 2 at 4.57pm and he says any money he makes will be given to the Ronald McDonald House charity.
