Best British Coins in Spink's Autumn sale

Apart from Coins of North East India, Spink's Autumn sale will be offering Season's Best Offering of British Coins. Spink's Autumn sale of British coins will take place on 25 September 2013. This is the best selection of English, Scottish, Irish and Anglo-Gallic coins offered in London this season.

Included in the sale is part II of the Ross Blakey collection of Tudor coins with good examples of many denominations and rarities including an Edward VI gold Crown and an Elizabeth I 'portcullis money' 4 Testerns of 1601, struck for use by the East India Company in its first ventures.

Portcullis Money were the first coins issued for the British Empire outside the normal coinage that were issued for England. The introduction of this coin is a failure. Traders in the East Indies did not want to accept these new and unfamiliar coins compare to Eight Reales that was already well-established. Today, only less than two hundred surviving Portcullis coins of which many are in museums.
