In January 2012, Austria Mint has released €25 Austria Bionics Niobium Coin, the tenth coin in the silver niobium series. The silver outer ring and Purple colour niobium ‘pill’, illustrates how evolution in the natural world acts as a prototype for technology. Only 65,000 pieces of the coins will be minted and the delivery will only start on March 2012. the coin quality is Brilliant Uncirculated, come with a box and certificate.
The obverse shows the complex nautilus shell, often used as a model for leading edge modern design buildings. Above the nautilus an eagle flies – symbolizing the inspiration for an aircraft. The lotus flower to the left gave rise to repellents. The reverse side features an interior view of the Munich Olympic stadium, the roof of which was designed based on findings in the bionic world based on radiolarian shells. A highly magnified radiolarian shell is shown in the foreground.
The name "Niobium" comes from Greek mythology: Niobe, daughter of Tantalus. Niobium is a metal with extremely high chemical stability, low toxicity, improve the strength of steel and can be colored through ‘anodized oxidation’, the method first applied to coins by the Austrian Mint. A thin oxide layer is produced on the coin surface and subsequent light refraction enables different colours to arise. Other applications of niobium include its use in welding, nuclear industries, electronics, optics and jewelry.
