€10 Richard Strauss 150th Anniversary Silver Coin

On 5 June 2014, The Deutsche Bundesbank or The Central Bank of The Federal Republic of Germany has released a €10 collector’s coin 2014 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss. The collector’s coin is being issued in two versions: a mint-condition coin made from a cupronickel alloy and a higher-value silver coin with a proof-like finish. The silver coin weighs 16 grams. The alloy is made up of 625 parts silver to 375 parts copper, indicated by the inscription “Silber 625”.

The coin’s obverse shows one of the best known portraits of Richard Strauss and shows him in middle age, designed by the artist Erich Ott, based in Munich.

The reverse features an eagle framed by the words “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND”, the value and denomination, the letter “D” for the federal mint in Bavaria, the year 2014, and the twelve stars of Europe.

The coin’s smooth edge is embossed with the inscription:

"TON UND WORT SIND BRUDER UND SCHWESTER"
("melody and words are brother and sister")

The collector’s coins are to be minted at the federal mint in Munich, Bavaria (D).

The mint condition coins can be purchased at all Bundesbank branches.

On 21 August 2013, the German government decided to issue a €10 coin in June 2014 to mark the 150th birthday of the composer and conductor Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949). Strauss was born on 11 June 1864 in Munich, Germany.
