Berlin Wall

The coin obverse show a young everyman escaping from oppression and totalitarianism – represented by the Berlin Wall and barbed wire.

The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The date on which the Wall fell is considered to have been 9 November 1989 but the Wall not torn down immediately.

The Berlin Wall was 156.4km long with some of it at 3.6 metres (12 ft) high, anti-vehicle trenches, barbed wire, dogs on long lines, "beds of nails" under balconies hanging over the "death strip", over 302 watchtowers, and bunkers. You can visit 1.4 kilometers Berlin Wall Memorial situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse to get a feel for the history of The Berlin Wall.
