On 2 April 2014, The Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (ABMD) launched commemorative silver coins in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of Brunei-Japan diplomatic relations. The .999 Silver coin manufactured by the Japan Mint under the authorisation of the AMBD.
The coins feature a portrait of His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on obverse.
On the reverse show National flags and symbolic flowers of Brunei "Simpur" Dilenia Suffruticosa and "Sakura" cherry blossoms from Japan.
Only 500 pieces of the coins available for purchased at the Brunei central bank’s Monetary Operations Department at the Ministry of Finance building. 5,000 pieces will be sold in Japan. Details of their sale in Japan will be released later this month.
The silver coins which carry a $30-face value and weighs 31.10gm, are sold at $100 per piece. The commemorative coins will be legal tender in Brunei.
Brunei is the fifth foreign country for which Japan Mint has manufactured coins after World War II. The mint manufactured coins for Cambodia and Bangladesh last year.
