On 28 October 2013, the Central Bank of Malta has issued new €2 commemorative coin for 2103 with a theme ‘Self-government – 1921’, a third coin in the series of €2 commemorative coins highlighting milestones in Malta’s Constitutional History. Minted by the Royal Dutch Mint, the commemorative coin will be issued in circulation quality in rolls of 25 coins each, each roll selling at the price of €70. A limited number of this coin was also issued in proof quality, selling at the price of €15 per coin.
The theme of this coin is ‘Self-government – 1921’. The coin reverse shows the common €2 side while the obverse (national side) depicts a map of the Maltese islands and a representation of the Maltese population designed by the Maltese artist Ġanni Bonnici.
Malta was granted a form of self-rule by the British government in 1921, in the aftermath of the First World War and the socio-economic hardship it left in its wake. Although Britain retained direct control over various key administrative functions, the new constitution granted Malta increased powers of self-government including an elected Cabinet of Ministers which for the first time became responsible for the administration of local affairs.
The coins will be available from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta. For further information, you can contact the Malta Coins Distribution Centre by an e-mail to mcdc@centralbankmalta.org or by calling (+356) 2550 6006/6007.
