An extremely rare Johor Mas gold coin (lot 189) sold for SGD9500 (excluding buyer premium) or RM25,636 in the Collectibles Auction Asia (CAA) Auction 5/2015 held today (18-4-2015) at Landmark Village Hotel, Singapore. The round gold coin (SS11) during the reign of Sultan Abdullah Ha'ayat Shah of Johor (1615-1623) grade extremely fine condition.
According to Saran Singh in his Book; The Encyclopedia of the coins of Malaysia Singapore & Brunei, A trade coinage in gold for the State of Johor first appeared in the reign of the first Sultan Ala'uddin. It consisted of two denominations, the mas and the kupang and was used as far north as Patani and Kedah as well as parts of Sumatra. A Mas usually weighed between 36 to 40 grains (40 grains = 2.592 grams) while a Kupang weighed about 9-10 grains (10 grains = 0.648 grams), thus establishing the rate of exchange at 4 Kupang to 1 Mas.
