Bank of England New £20 note issued 20 February 2020

On 10 October 2019, The Bank of England unveiled the design of the new £20 note featuring the artist Joseph Mallord William Turner. It will be issued for the first time on 20 February 2020. For the first time, the note incorporates two windows and a two-colour foil, making it very difficult to counterfeit.

The polymer £20 note contains sophisticated security features making it the most secure Bank of England banknote yet.

Polymer notes last longer than paper notes and they stay in better condition during day-to-day use. This note, like the polymer £10, will contain a tactile feature to help vision impaired people identify the denomination.

The polymer £20 note will join the Churchill £5 and the Austen £10. A new £50 note, featuring Alan Turing, will follow in 2021. The public will begin to see the new £20 from 20 February next year as the notes leave cash centres around the country and enter general circulation.

The public can continue to spend paper £20 notes as usual and these will be gradually withdrawn as they are banked by retailers and the public. Notice will be given six months ahead of legal tender status of the paper £20 being withdrawn.

Commenting on the new note, the Governor Mark Carney said: “Our banknotes celebrate the UK’s heritage, salute its culture, and testify to the achievements of its most notable individuals. And so it is with the new £20 banknote, featuring JMW Turner, launched today at Turner Contemporary in Margate. Turner’s contribution to art extends well beyond his favourite stretch of shoreline. Turner’s painting was transformative, his influence spanned lifetimes, and his legacy endures today. The new £20 note celebrates Turner, his art and his legacy in all their radiant, colourful, evocative glory.”

The new £20 note will be the first to feature the signature of Sarah John, the Bank’s Chief Cashier.

She said: “The new £20 is an important part of our commitment to providing banknotes that people can use with confidence. Our polymer notes are much harder to counterfeit and, with the £20 being our most common note, this marks a big step forward in our fight against counterfeiting. I hope the public will look forward to spending their new Turner £20s from February next year.”

Features on the new £20 note include:

• A large see-through window with a blue and gold foil on the front depicting Margate lighthouse and Turner Contemporary. The foil is silver on the back. The shape of the large window is based on the shape of the fountains in Trafalgar Square.
• A smaller see-through window in the bottom corner of the note, inspired by Tintern Abbey.
• JMW Turner’s self-portrait, painted c. 1799 and currently on display in Tate Britain.
• One of Turner’s most eminent paintings The Fighting Temeraire; a tribute to the ship HMS Temeraire which played a distinguished role in Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The painting is currently on display in the National Gallery and was voted the nation’s favourite painting in a 2005 poll run by BBC Radio 4.
• A metallic hologram which changes between the word ‘Twenty’ and ‘Pounds’ when the note is tilted.
• The Queen’s portrait in the see-through window with ‘£20 Bank of England’ printed twice around the edge.
• A silver foil patch with a 3D image of the coronation crown.
• A purple foil patch containing the letter ‘T’ and based on the staircase at the Tate Britain.
• A quote “Light is therefore colour” from an 1818 lecture by Turner referring to the innovative use of light, shade, colour and tone in his pictures.
• Turner’s signature from his Will, the document with which he bequeathed many of his paintings to the nation.

How the illegal investment company operate:

1) Illegal operators usually operate on a small scale and claim they can provide remittance services efficiently, without the need for any documents or identification. They rarely use documents to validate and verify the transactions. By engaging in these transactions, customers run the risk of being cheated and their funds may never reach its intended destination.

2) Illegal operators usually target job seekers by placing attractive advertisements to lure prospective employees to join the company, after which they use them to solicit for new investments. Most often, employees will be encouraged to approach their direct family, relatives and friends before targeting members of the public.

3) Illegal operators usually portray a professional and reputable image, a high-tech office layout and advanced IT facilities, such as a LCD screens displaying movements in exchange rates to provide the impression that a legitimate and real business is being conducted. These facilities are merely a false front.

4) Investors can either trade using their trading accounts with the company or through dealers appointed by the company. In some cases, investors are allowed to operate their accounts via the Internet.

5) Investors are also required to sign a business contract which is normally entered between the investors and a principal company overseas.

6) In most instances, the operators will inform the investors that they will have to send these contracts to its principal company overseas for signing. However, such contracts are usually left unsigned.

7) As such, in the event the investors are unhappy with future dealings and transactions, no action can be taken against the company as there is no binding contract between them.

8) Investors will usually get high returns on their initial investments. This will convince them to increase their investments in hopes of higher returns. Eventually, they will end up losing everything when the illegal operators suddenly go missing.

9) Investors who lose their money through purported volatility of exchange rate movements are informed by the illegal operators that they need to pay margin-call in order to recover their paper loss

10) The illegal operators may also encourage investors to increase their investment to try to recover their losses.

Australia new effigy of Queen Elizabeth II announced

Yesterday, Australian Government announced the exciting news that in 2019 Australia will adopt a new effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, on all circulating and collector coins.

The new effigy of The Queen will be only the sixth to feature on Australia’s coins since Her Majesty’s accession to the throne in 1952.

The effigy was designed by Jody Clark, an engraver for the United Kingdom’s Royal Mint. Jody Clark’s original effigy was chosen through a competition commissioned by the United Kingdom’s Royal Mint Advisory Committee and has been in use in the United Kingdom since 2015.

The effigy to feature on Australian coins is an adaptation of Jody Clark’s original drawings. Her Majesty is portrayed wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem, which was worn for The Coronation. In keeping with tradition, Her Majesty continues to face to the right of the coin.

Assistant Minister to the Treasurer, the Hon Michael Sukkar MP, welcomed the change: “The Government is upholding the tradition of periodically updating Her Majesty’s image on Australia’s coins. This new effigy will replace the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy which has been in use since 1998.”

Australians can expect to start seeing the new effigy on 2019-dated coins.

It may take some time before these coins appear in people's change as the new coins will be distributed through banks across Australia as a first priority.

Coins bearing previous effigies of Her Majesty will not be removed from circulation and will continue to be legal tender.

$10 Straits Settlements note sold RM496,156

A very rare $10 Government of the Straits Settlements, bearing one of the scarcer dates 1 January 1931 signed by Luis Shelley with serial number A/1 00001 sold for £90,000 (RM496,156) in pink World and British Banknotes Auction on April 11.

The first $10 banknote to be issued for Straits Settlements sold nearly three times higher than estimates value of £35,000. A most important banknote and the first portrait $10 with portrait of George V for the Straits Settlements.

The banknote is accompanied by a letter titled MEMORANDUM from the CHAIRMAN AND MANAGING DIRECTOR of the banknote printer, Bradbury Wilkinson and is addressed to "Dear Cecil, I am sending you herewith $10 note, No. A/1 000001, first issued of this value. I thought you might like to have it as a personal memento of your great victory.”

The Governor of the Straits Settlements at the date of this letter, '14th April 1932' was Sir Cecil Clementi and this without doubt is the 'Dear Cecil' referred to in the letter.

Sir Cecil Clementi Smith was the governor and commander-in-chief of the Straits Settlements, and the high commissioner for the Federated Malay States from 1929 to 1934. Clementi resigned as Governor on 18 October 1934 on grounds of ill health, while on leave in England.

1836 Classic Head Quarter Eagle in CSNS Auctions

A rare proof specimen of the 1836 Classic Head Quarter Eagle and an extraordinary 1915-S Panama-Pacific Round Fifty Dollar Gold Piece are among the rarities highlighting Heritage Auctions' seven sessions as the official auctioneer of the Central States Numismatic Society Convention, April 25-28 in Schaumburg, Illinois.

"An estimated seven examples of the 1836 Classic Head quarter eagle are presumed to exist in various grades," said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. "The proof offered in our Platinum Night Auction claims the most illustrious pedigree of any other known specimens, with ownership tied to famous numismatists Lorin G. Parmelee, John Mills, William H. Woodin and Louis Eliasberg, Sr., among others."

The Central States auctions include a plethora of early copper, early type, gold, patterns and silver rarities, with an emphasis on rare proof and branch mint gold and patterns. The highly anticipated 1915-S Panama-Pacific Round Fifty Dollar Gold Piece, MS66 PCGS Secure. CAC., presents collectors one of the U.S. Mint's most sought-after classic commemoratives and the first PCGS-graded Premium Gem to appear at Heritage.

A newly discovered 1856-O Liberty Double Eagle, PCGS Genuine. XF Details, considered by some to be the rarest gold coin struck at the New Orleans Mint, makes its auction debut at Central States. The discovery is a history-making opportunity for advanced collectors to obtain a particularly special 1856-O, a coin already listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.

A classic rarity in the American gold series, an 1883 Liberty Double Eagle, PR64 Deep Cameo is one of 26 examples certified from the small proof-only mintage of 92 pieces. The PR64 Deep Cameo on offer marks its first auction appearance in 55 years.

The convention auctions also include several standout lots from first-time consignors as well as unusual discoveries, such as a 48-piece grading set for 1879-CC Morgan dollars (has one each of both the "Perfect" CC mintmark as well as the "Capped Die" CC mintmark) — a tremendously challenging set to assemble yet offered as a single lot.

The auctions feature nine named private collections, highlighted by the Collection of William Rau. A collector since the 1950s, Rau's research into U.S. pattern coins recently earned recognition by the American Numismatic Association. On offer are more than 250 lots from his collection, including standout finds, such as an 1867 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Red, PCGS, struck in copper, and an 1870 Standard Silver Half Dollar, PR65 PCGS, struck in aluminum. Among branch mint gold rarities on offer are an 1861-D Liberty Five, AU55, NGC, and an 1854-S Quarter Eagle, VF35 PCGS. The latter coin is one of 12 known surviving 1854-S quarter eagles of the 246 examples struck with this date. The coin's pedigree includes the Davis-Graves and Norweb Collections.

Baltimore Currency Auction Realizes $10,440,026

The four sessions of Stack's Bowers Galleries' much anticipated Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo realized $10,440,026 (all prices include the buyer's fee). ​2 $1000 Legal Tender Note realized $960,000.

On March 22, featured the landmark Joel R. Anderson Collection Part I during which 64 lots realized an astounding $7,912,140. Seven lots from that collection each realized more than $500,000, including the finest known Fr.186d 1863 $1000 Legal Tender Note graded Choice About New 58 by PCGS Currency that brought $960,000. The only privately held Fr.187b 1880 $1000 Legal Tender Note, graded Choice About New 55 by PCGS Currency, also realized $960,000. A PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64 PPQ Fr.183c 1863 $500 Legal Tender Note was sold for $900,000.

The A.J. Vanderbilt Collection of U.S. Paper Money which saw a total realization of $818,100. Among the highlights of that collection was the finest known Demand Note, an Fr.2 1861 $5 graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ by PMG that sold for $372,000. Also featured was the finest PMG graded Fr.1136 1870 $5 National Gold Bank Note from the First National Gold Bank of San Francisco, Ch. #1741. This PMG Extremely Fine 40 EPQ graded note realized $66,000.

Friday night's currency session featured 503 lots which realized a total of $1,509,450. Among the leading lots of that session was a Fr.1132-H 1918 $500 Federal Reserve Note from St. Louis graded Extremely Fine 40 by PCGS Currency that realized $26,400. A PMG Very Fine 30 Net graded Fr.2221-G 1934 $5000 Federal Reserve Note from Chicago sold for $63,000. An 1882 $20 Brown Back from the Calumet National Bank of South Chicago, Illinois, Ch. #3102 and PCGS Currency graded Fine 15, brought $20,400. Small size National Currency was hot with a 1929 Type 1 $10 from the First National Bank of Zillah, Washington, Ch. #9576, and graded Fine 12 by PMG selling for $28,800.
