€20 Battle of Clontarf Gold Proof Coin

On 30th April 2014, The Central Bank of Ireland has launch limited edition €20 Battle of Clontarf Gold Proof Coin to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf. The coin is struck in .999 Fine Gold with a limited issue of 12,000 pieces. The coin was designed by Irish artist and sculptor Noel Hoare.

Clontarf is probably the best-known battle in Irish history, but also one of the least understood. Popular perception sees the battle as the great victory where the Christian king of Ireland, Brian Boru, defeated the pagan Vikings and drove them out of Ireland.

The coin reverse show a portrayal of High King of Ireland Brian Ború and the words ‘Clontarf 1014’.

Brian Ború Harp

The obverse show the traditional representation of the Irish harp, known as the Brian Ború Harp.

Coins can also be purchased at The Central Bank of Ireland Dame Street office from 1 May 2014 (cash and card payments accepted). Opening hours are Mon-Fri 10am – 3:30pm, excl. public holidays.
