Canada 2012 Silver Loonie Coin

Royal Canadian Mint has just released a Canada 2012 Silver Loonie coin for the 25 years anniversary of the Loonie. The Silver-Plated 25th Anniversary of the Loonie Coin (1987-2012) is available in a Coin Card along with a plastic envelope and includes a “Build your own Loon” paper toy as well as a full color mini-book with illustrations telling the story of the Loonie. The Loonie name come from The Great Northern Diver (a bird), known in North America as the Common Loon (Gavia immer), is a large member of the loon, or diver, family of birds.

The obverse of the coin show the current portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt and in use since 2003. The reverse, shows the loon with the commemorative year depiction of “1987 – 2012” and the text “CANADA” above the design and “DOLLAR” below.
