Malaysia CONTOH banknotes sold RM92,615 in CAA Auction 7

A complete set of Malaysia 1986-1995 6th series CONTOH banknotes (RM 1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50, RM100, RM500, RM 1000) sold for a record price RM92,615 (SGD32,000) in Collectibles Auction Asia (CAA) 7/2016, today.

CONTOH

The specimen banknotes signed by Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dato Jaffar Hussein. Engraved & Printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Ltd, England.

All with red CONTOH on face and back. RM 1 with vertical serial number DR0000000 in red at left and specimen No.177.RM 10 with vertical serial number PV0000000 in red at left and specimen No.025.RM 5; RM 50; RM 50; RM 100; RM 500 and RM 1000 w/o serial number, Specimen No.133; 431; 027; 035; 033; 142 respectively. All UNC.

Another highlight of the auction is the highest grade 50 sen 1969 Milled Edge (w/o Security Edge) PCGS MS 66, sold for RM63,673 (SGD22,000). So far, there is no other coins graded higher then MS 65 by either Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), the second best 50 sen 1969 Milled Edge is a NGC MS65.

A special Malaysia Official Proof Set, issued to long serving senior officials of Bank Negara Malaysia security staff on their retirement sold for RM57,885 (SGD20,000). The proof set coins presented to long serving officials of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) security staff, Encik Abu Bakar Bin Mat Daud.

The proof set contains:
  • 1967 1 sen copper.
  • 1967 5, 10, 20 & 50 sen Cupro Nickel Proof.
  • 1969 $1 Silver Proof, 10th Anniv of Bank Negara Malaysia commemorative.
  • 1971 $1 Cupro Nickel Proof Parliament House.
  • 1971 $5 Cupro Nickel Proof Parliament House.
  • 1971 RM 100 Gold proof, Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman commemorative (very rare).
  • 1972, $1 Cupro Nickel KL City Commemorative.

An extremely rare Johor Sultanate coins, Johor Mas (Gold) SS11, Sultan Abdullah Ha'ayat Shah III (1615-1623) sold for a record price RM28,845 (SGD10,000), the highest price so far for Malay Sultanate coins. The coin obverse feature Arabic words "Sultan Abdullah Shah" and on the coin reverse Khalifatul Muminin, whic mean Ruler of the faithful-i.e. of the religion of Islam. Edge: Plain. Weight: 2.48gm. Diameter: 20.88mm. Composition: Gold (Round).
