International Coin Design Competition (ICDC) 2015

Japan Mint invites everyone around the world to join the International Coin Design Competition (ICDC) 2015. All ages and nationalities are eligible to enter and submit their entry starting from June 1st, 2015 for general category and June 15th, 2015 for student category.

When I check the past winners for the Competition, I found out some Malaysian have won the ICDC in the past. Searching their names, I also found out that some of them is actually a designer for Bank Negara Malaysia Kilang Wang or once known as Royal Mint of Malaysia.

  • Mohd Jamil bin Mohd Isa- (Jury's Special Award ICDC 2010-The Beauty of Malaysian Carving).
  • Saiful Haizad Bin Ahamad Jainid- (Student-Future Designer ICDC 2008-Wayang Kulit Malay Shadow Puppets).
  • Siti Hawa Ismail Tan- (Jury's Special Award ICDC 2007-Malaysia's Celebrationof Blooms).
  • Mr. Mohd. Ubaidillah bin Daud- (Excellent Work ICDC 2006-theme:Rhinoceros Hornbill Bird).
  • Ismail Ibrahim- (Excellent Work ICDC 2005-theme:The Force of Nature), (Fine Work ICDC 2004-theme:Save the children), (Fine Work ICDC 2003-theme:Save the Planet)

Japan Mint held the Coin Design Competition in order to encourage coin designers around the world in their creative activities and enhance the artistry of their coin designs.

The competition divided into two categories; General and Student (any student who is registered at any school and was born on or after August 31st, 1985).

A sketch and a pair of plaster models (the obverse and reverse sides) of the coin design are required for general category. Entrants for student category only need to send a sketch of the coin design (the obverse and reverse sides).

PRIZE
GENERAL:
  • Award for Most Excellent Work (one award): 500,000 yen, an award plaque, and a medal featuring the awarded design
  • Award for Excellent Work (one award): 200,000 yen, an award plaque, and a medal featuring the awarded design
  • Award for Fine Work (three awards): 100,000 yen

STUDENT:
Award for Future Designer (one award): 50,000 yen and an award plaque

GENERAL/STUDENT:
Jury's Special Award: 50,000 yen

All designs to be entered must arrive at the Japan Mint not later than the last day of the Entry Period (August 31st, 2015 for general category and September 14th, 2015 for student category).

Please attach a paper presenting your information to the reverse side of your sketches and send them to the address given below. The information should be written in Japanese or English and consist of:

Telephone number, fax number, and E-mail address
Category (GENERAL or STUDENT)
Name of your school (entrants in STUDENT category only)
Title of the work
Theme and brief description of your designs

Prizewinners will be informed of the final results of the judging for both the GENERAL and STUDENT categories by the end of December, 2015. Winners of the Most Excellent Work and Excellent Work awards will be exhibited at the Tokyo International Coin Convention to be held in May 2016.
