1914 Yuan Shih Kai Dollar sold €35,400

A 1914 Yuan Shih Kai in uniform silver dollar sold for €35,400 (US$45,422) on September 13, in Elsen Auction 122 at Jean ELSEN & ses Fils s.a. sale room, Brussels, Belgium. The silver dollar coin show Yuan Shikai, the second president of the Republic of China, in military uniform facing left.

Yuan Shih Kai

This coin was produced to replace foreign and Provincial dragon dollars in circulation.The coins were struck at many mints with uniform dies provided by the Tientsin mint. The Republic of China National Currency Regulations issued in 1914 had envisioned a uniform standard, with one Yuan Shikai silver dollar equal to, for example five 20 cents silver coins or 100 copper cent.

A few chop marks on both sides. The obverse represents the God of Longevity, shown as an old man. On the reverse is a sacrificial vase. Generally these pieces are found covered with an important number of chops. Specimens with a few chops are much scarcer.
