Must Read Coin Card Posts

I am sorry for the late post for my blogtalk challenge; Malaysia coin cards. Many thing happened in a blogger world lately and I need to learn many new thing. For instance, my other coin blog (malaysiancoin.com) cannot be viewed. I need to learn how to do the setting myself because my hosting provider want to charge me just for a simple thing. Its like a coin card scenario in Malaysia before, nobody don't want to look at the thing when their price are just below RM20 a piece including me. Most of us were thinking one copy of the cards are enough, why do I need to bother buying more if the price don't going anywhere. Thanks to all the genius dealers who play some control with the market, the price going up. Some of the coin card prices had been going up pretty fast.

coin card

Back to my blogtalk challenge, only one blogger dare to take the challenge. Most of other Malaysian numismatic blogger just keep on doing the same thing, sharing their collection online. You cannot go anywhere in the blogger world if you keep doing that. You need to share knowledge not just collection. We have many numismatic bloggers in Malaysia but most of you will stop blogging after a few months, I had seen blogger come and go. In my opinion, blogging is the important way to promote coin collecting hobbies. Nowadays, most people will search for information online, most of them don't know that a book exist. :D

Mr. Danny from Mr. Danny's Coin and Banknotes Collection wrote an article about Hockey World Cup 2002 coin card expensive? He is from Sabah and sharing how he a little bit shock when hearing his friends online said the card price at RM150 in Peninsular Malaysia. He has been searching for the cards almost every time when he visit coin shop and cannot find any for sell. He is lucky when he found out that a shop in Kompleks Karamunsing is selling the cards for RM50. Most probably that shop don't know the market price of that cards. It will be a great post if Mr. Danny share some pictures and information of the said shop because I knew in Sabah, most collectors only knew two place to find their collection; Wisma Merdeka and Gaya Street Tamu.

In my other blog, Malaysiancoin.com, I share Market price of Malaysia coin cards:

*RM mean Malaysia Ringgit.

I know some Malaysian out there who are afraid to share the real market price of Malaysia coins. They afraid they cannot get the item at a cheaper price next time. In my opinion, when people knew the real price, they will share it with their friends. The price will be going up when everyone start to search for it. You will not lose anything for sharing some information.

Republika Hrvatska Exchange Rate

How much is 100,000 Republika Hrvatska to US Dollar? Do you know Republika Hrvatska Exchange Rate? People always email me asking about the stories that I posted long time ago, you can read about it here; Republic of Croatia or Republika Hrvatska banknote. I also saw this note on sale by some Malaysia banknote dealers for a high price (around 45 ringgit a piece for 100,000 dinar) and the dealer said it is a good value if you're looking at the Croatia exchange rate today. Just beware, that guy is not telling you the truth. You cannot exchange this note with money changer since its already been recall long time ago. You cannot exchange this notes with any money changer.

Republika Hrvatska banknote

The notes is Republic of Croatia or Republika Hrvatska 1991-1993 issue banknote. In 1991, notes were introduced in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 100, 500 and 1000 dinara, with 2000, 5000 and 10,000 dinara notes added in 1992 and 50,000 and 100,000 dinara in 1993. The obverse of all banknotes was the same, with a picture of Ragusan scientist Ruđer Bošković. Notes up to 1000 dinara had Zagreb cathedral on reverse. The higher denominations featured the Ivan Meštrović sculpture History of the Croats on the reverse.

During its existence the dinar declined in value by a factor of about 70. The dinar was replaced by the kuna at a rate of 1 kuna = 1000 dinara. That mean if you get 100,000 dinar:
100,000/70=1,428.
1,428= 1 dinar 43 Lipa.
1 dinar 43 Lipa=25 cents US dollar. (1 dollar = 5.59 Croatia Kuna).

Again I want to remind everyone, this banknote has been demonetized since 1995 and no more legal tender.

Malaysia new banknote market price

How much Malaysia new banknote market price right now? Many non-collectors asking me the same question. Most of them are investor who want to get some profit from Malaysia new commemorative banknote especially from  the premier set (a complete collection of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50 and RM100 with same serial number). Its a little bit hard to find premier set outside Kuala Lumpur since Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) don't have branches in some Malaysia states and they distribute a small quantity of the premier set in other states. If you want the premier set, the best way is to buy it from BNM KL or called your nearest BNM branch.

How much the price for the new commemorative banknote?
1. Premium set = RM380-RM400 (BNM sell price RM300) and goes up to RM450 outside Kuala Lumpur.
2. Set of 2 (RM1 and RM5) = RM20 (BNM sell price RM15) and goes up to RM25 outside Kuala Lumpur.
3. Set of 1 (RM20)= RM35 (BNM sell price RM30) and goes up to RM45 outside Kuala Lumpur.

With so much interest on the new banknotes, BNM has implemented a new rules:
Effective 3rd January 2012, all purchases of the new commemorative banknotes sets will require you to register your name in our system and present your MyKad/MyKid to us. For foreigners, you will have to present your passport. Once registered and cleared by the system, you may purchase the maximum quantity of the sets (i.e ONLY 1 set for premium and 5 sets EACH for the set of 2 and set of 1). Otherwise you will need to come in a week's time to make another purchase. This practice is standardised at all counters (HQ and branches). We hope everyone will follow this simple rule so that many people will have an equal chance to buy the sets. Thank you... and yes, ALL sets are still AVAILABLE for purchase.
Source: BNM official Facebook.

Congratulations to BNM for the new rules. Hopefully that will help all collectors get at least 1 piece of the premier set and hopefully BNM will strictly enforce it to everyone.

What is your opinion about the new banknotes? Have you bought the premier series? I heard about a rare case in Sarawak that collector bought the premier series for RM350 in BNM Kuching, is that true? Will it be helpful if BNM make an online shop like most of the world mint? Share your opinion in here.

Nilai duit lama

I had been writing about "nilai duit lama" (Malaysia old currency value) a long time ago but still many of my readers, email me asking for the same thing. The best way to know what is the value of Malaysia coins and banknotes are by buying any of this two books; Steven Tan Standard catalogue or KN Boon Books. You will get the latest nilai duit lama from any of the books. What I am sharing with everyone is from Steven Tan old catalogue books. It is just meant for a new collector or anyone who own an old coins to understand Malaysia Coins and banknote value. If you're really serious on collecting, you should buy any of those books.

nilai duit lama

For "nilai duit syiling", you can read my post; Check your coin value. Only Malaysia Parliament coin series are displayed on that post. This is because the 2nd series @bunga raya coin series value are mostly only have face value. Old doesn't mean the value and prices are higher. Many readers mistakenly think that their old coins can bring them fortune. That why you can see many sellers in Mudah.my selling their old coins for thousand of ringgit. I am sharing the price value to prevent Malaysian from selling their coins for a ridiculous price.

What coins that you should be looking for?

Saran Singh books

Many Malaysian numismatic enthusiast must already know Saran Singh by now even if you're young or old. He is a Pakar Numismatic Malaysia that had wrote many books for our reference and reading. One of my dreams is to get all books written by him in my collection but look like it is not easy. Most of his book is so valuable, people don't want to sell them. Unless they have extra copies or they're not collector. I recently found two article by my fellow Malaysian blogger that wrote about him recently.

One of them is by whycollect, he talk about Saran Singh books Pictorial Guide To Grading Of Malaysian Coins and Bank Notes. He too have the same dreams like mine, to get all the Saran Singh books in his collection. I think many collector that serious in collecting have the same dreams to. Another Blogger@Pakar himslef dniew talk about Malaysia veteran numismatist and share some pictures of them. You can see recent pictures of Mr. Saran Singh. Its hard to find all the sifu in one place but you most probably could this Sunday for MNS auction no. 148. Will talk about it later.

A little bit biography of Mr. Saran Singh. Saran Singh was born on 10th March 1945 in Kuala Lumpur. He received his early education at St. Gabriel's School in Kuala Lumpur. Saran started to enter the field of numismatics in 1969. His specialities includes Penang, Straits Settlements, Sarawak, British North Borneo, the tin/lead coins of early Brunei, Singapore Merchants Tokens, Sikh coin of Punjab and Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei coins and Banknote. On 3rd December 1989 he received the honour P.N.M (Pakar Numismatic Malaysia) by Malaysia Numismatic Society.

I found a list in the web somewhere that show Malaysia numismatic books for sale with a complete list of Saran Singh and Mohd. Kassim Ali books title but I cannot find it. Here are some books that written by Mr. Saran Singh, please add if I missed any of his books.

1. The Catalogue of the coins of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. 1700-1974.

2. Pictorial Guide to Grading of Malaysian coins and banknotes. 1978.

3. The Encyclopedia Of The Coins Of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei 1400 - 1967.

Most of the books are publish by Malaysia Numismatic Society. I hope one day, MNS will republished this books and some other books published by MNS long time ago since most new collector like me will surely to get a copies of these books for our future reference.

Please correct and add if there is any books written by Mr. Saran Singh that is not in the list.

Where to sell your gold coins?

The Gold price has been breached USD $1500 an ounce for the first time last month and it will continue to goes up. It will not be hard to sell your coins when the price is going up since many people willing to buy them if you know where to put them for sale. Where to sell your gold coins? Not everyone knew where can you sell your precious metal. Here are some tips from me on where can you sell your gold coins in Malaysia.

1. Among other collectors.
Networking among other collector is an important thing if you want to sell your items in the future. Without any friends, people will be afraid to deal with you since nobody know you. Most people afraid that they will get scam with a fake golds or scammer who just want to offer cheap gold price. Try joining a group in Facebook, register with Malaysia Numismatic Society or any other numismatic group you can find. Collectors will give you the highest price from other type of buyers.

2. Sell them online
You can try to sell them online yourself in Mudah.my or eBay Malaysia. Its not hard to start. What you need is just register your ID and post your item for sale. make sure you give the best pictures for your coins; obverse and reverse pictures. You also need to give as much details as you can. If your item is proof coin, it will be easy to find the details since you have the card with you. If you don't have the details, try search them in Google. If you're newbies, try to avoid buyer from oversea. Most of the time, a scammer will try to contact you if you sell any gold online. If the buyer want to do meet up to collect its item, make sure you bring along a friends.

3.Jewelry/coin shops
Most shop will buy your gold 70% from the gold value. Try to asked around on the same day for best price before you decide to sell them to the shops. Most of the time, they offer you a low value first. Make sure you knew your gold coin carat. Most gold coins is in 21K or .917 fineness but they're some coin with 24K gold. Also check if your coin a rare. A rare coin have a high value if you're selling them in a coin shop but jewelry shop will just offering you a scrap value.

4. Gold Investment Company
Most people don't know that Gold Investment company like Publicgold and Nubex buy your gold coins. Sometimes their prices are higher then Jewelry/coin shops. If you want to sell, make sure you check PublicGold PublicDinar website, they will buy 70% from the gold value according to their PublicDinar buy price and check Nubex website under sell your gold tab.

5. Pawnshops
You can find any pawnshop near your area but not all pawnshop will buy gold coins. They'll test your gold for authenticity and then offer a price. This is not the best place to sell your coins but when nobody want to buy, they always have no problem buying it from you. You also have an option to pawn your gold coins before you sell it to them.

Any of you knew other places that we can sell our gold coins in Malaysia?

Malaysia 10 sen 1972

"Do you looking for information about 1972 Malaysia 10 sen? I have one piece of the coin and since the price of the 1971 10 sen is over RM300, I think this coin will get a higher price then that? At least double the price from the Malaysia rare 1971 10 sen. If you don't understand, I want to sell it for RM600. Take it or leave it."

If you're reading this, please don't misunderstood me. That is not my words but an email I received few days back. A guy (I think a kids) is trying to sell me a coin that everyone is talking about in most forums in Malaysia. Hahahahahaha.... I am just laughing reading that email. Most people were looking for this particular coins to complete their collection. They already got all other years but 1972 still missing from their collection. I seen it in Lowyat forum, I seen it in Carigold forum and other bloggers talking about it as well.

For everyone information:
There is no 10 sen 1972 coin minted by Bank Negara Malaysia.

There are also no other denominations minted for 1972. Will put up the actual list in this blog later. So everyone will not get cheated and paying a high price for a fake item. Bank Negara Malaysia don't minted coins for that year because our country already had a large amount of coins over 200million 10 sen already been minted before 1971. During that year, do you know how many Malaysia Population we got?

Why there is someone selling 1972 10 sen coin, complete with the actual picture of the coins?
Because everyone is looking for it and they can sell a high value for that coin. Imagine if they can sell you for RM200 a piece? How much they get profit from that? If you find one in Mudah.my, most probably the coin has been altered, like my coin picture in here. It only took me 10 minutes to make a 1972 10 sen coin using a photo software.

I heard it had a special metal, it minted in silver, not like the rest of other coins, thats why the price is expensive.
I don't think Malaysia coin will be minted in Silver during that year since silver price already gone up. If you found 1972 10 sen that look like silver, that most probably silver plated. Only top of the coins has been put silver on it. I have seen that a very long time ago.

You can read the list in my old post about "nilai duit lama Malaysia" (Malaysia old coin value). If there is no price on the list, thats mean that coins are not minted for that year. If you want the latest price, you can but coins catalog by Steven Tan or KN Boon.

I haven't finish studying the whole book yet but I can see some of the minted 2010 coins in this book. Maybe that when they started to prepare for this books. Looking at the famous Malaysia coins 1971 10 sen, the price is not far from the market value RM200 for Uncirculated. The price for Uncirculated one ringgit signed by Ali Abul also at the Market price of RM1,800. Beside the normal new commemorative or circulation coin and banknote, new items also included in this book are The Government of Sarawak Liberation Note and Malaya Board of Commisioners of Currency Hand Executed Essay (c.1937). Both item listed in Spink Catalogue in 2009.

There is no error coins for Malaysia bunga raya recorded in this book. Even though some of the collector in Malaysia busy looking for them. I am not sure if some of you knew anything about it. Overall, this book is almost the same as the 2007 book but with the new market price. What I can see is more advertisement in this book. almost 100 pages of them altogether. To anyone of you who still don't own it, buy them. It a must if you called yourself as a coin collector for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei coins. You can try go to Steven Tan shop, if you get lucky like me. You might can get his personal autograph.

Thank you Mr. Steven Tan for 50 years of service to Malaysia Numismatic.

Malaysia Rare Coin Table Price

Yesterday another reader is suggesting that I make a table for Malaysia rare coin price and value. Thank you for your suggestion and I post them for all of you in here. I try to put that table in this blog but the size keep automatically resizing in blogspot. I change them to jpeg format and If any of you want to view it, just click to enlarge and save them as picture. The price is according to Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore Standard Catalog (18th edition) by Steven Tan. A new catalog should be out by this year and I will update you with their new price next time.

Malaysia Rare Coin

A reader is asking me What is Malaysia rare coin? I have been discussing this in many of my post before. Some of the coin is very hard to find and most dealer will not sale them according to catalog price. Error coin, coin that been tested for security feature but go out in circulation and Malaysia coin in circulation but have a low mintage is some of the rare coin that we can find in Malaysia.

An error coin is extremely rare to find but you can try to look them in any auction site. It is also hard to determine the price of an error coin because not everyone is looking for them. I try to look for Malaysia error coin and I found two auction that selling a clipped and a crack coin in e-bay Malaysia. Just beware about a clip coin, I found some video on how to do trick for a clipped coin in YouTube few years ago. Will try to look for them again next time and put in this blog. Some Malaysia error coin including blank obverse or reverse or both.

For circulation coin, Malaysia 1971 10 sen coin is a must for rare coin collector. Only 32,326 of this coin has been mintage and it is very hard to find a Uncirculated condition for this coin. I found one flea market seller who is selling this coin in Butterworth Roadwalk last year. Another extremely rare coin is Malaysia 1 sen 1979 nickel coin. So far only 2 coin has been found. This is some of the Malaysia rare coin that you must look for if you're looking for a rare coin.

-Malaysia 1970 1 sen -only 2,000,000 has been mintage
-Malaysia 1976 bronze 1 sen -only 100 pieces known to exist
-Malaysia 1979 nickel 1 sen -only 2 pieces known to exist
-Malaysia 1982 5 sen with extra dot on Parliament house
-Malaysia 1971 10 sen -only 32,326 has been mintage
-Malaysia 1970 20 sen -only 1,054,000 has been mintage
-Malaysia 1969 50 sen -only 2,000,000 has been mintage
-Malaysia 1979 50 sen extra dot
-Malaysia 1967, 1968 & 1969 50 sen without security edge.

You can find their price from my later post You need extra money, check your coin. A new standard catalog should be out by this year and the price should be going up. If you can find any of this rare coin in your possession (without buying them from a coin dealer), consider yourself a very lucky person. If I forget to put any coin that you think should be consider as a rare coin please do tell me via e-mail or comment, will be glad to put them in here. Happy hunting for all of you.

Malaya coin Price

Yesterday A reader of this blog asking me about a Malaya 1950 coin and how much their price would be. It is hard to determine the price of the coin without looking at the actual coin itself. You need to see the condition and grading the coin. A coin with high grade (Uncirculated) is a very hard to find for an old coin like this. Normally coin in possesion is in Very fine condition and not worth so much. Here is the price from Standard catalog for Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore 18th edition Book by Steven Tan for that reader reference.

Source: Standard catalog for Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore 18th edition Book by Steven Tan

You need extra money right? Check your coin.

You must have many coins in your piggy bank. Some put them in there to use in rainy day. While some just want to bank in them later. Please don't do any of the above before you check that coin. Your coin maybe will help you add up a bit of your money.

This is about Malaysia coin only. If not I need to write a few thousand pages for every coin in the world. Anyway, the concept is almost the same for any coin but please check standard catalogue for your country first.
If you got 1 sen coin, please feel free to check for year 1968 and 1970. This is because the mintage for 1968 is only 10,500,000 and the price for UNC is around RM20 per piece. The mintage for 1970 is 2,535,000 and the price for UNC is around RM50. For year 1976, you need to check for bronze variety. It is extremly rare but totally worth it because the price is around RM800 per piece for UNC. For 1979, you need to check for nickel variety because the price for UNC is RM3,100. A rare item that only a few lucky person can find this.

If you got 5 sen coin, feel free to check for year 1971 (mintage 16,657,712; UNC price=RM6),
1977 (mintage 10,609,162; UNC price=RM6) &
1982 (with extra "dot" on parliment house; UNC price=RM140).

For 10 sen, please don't ever missed 1971 coin because the mintage is only 32,326 and the price for UNC is around RM120.

If you got 20 sen coin, please check for year
1970 (mintage 1,054,000; UNC price=RM22),
1971 (mintage 9,958,000; UNC price=RM10),
1978 (mintage 6,847,000; UNC price=RM12) &
1994 (mintage 2,680,339; UNC price=RM45).

If you got 50 sen coin, please check for year
1969 (mintage 2,000,000; UNC price=RM150),
1979 (extra dot; UNC price=RM150), &

Do you know, some of your current banknote got value that can exceed 200 times then its face value? Have you ever check your banknote before you use them? Do you want to know?

The easiest banknote that can give you extra profit is by finding a replacement note. Current Replacement note is very easy to find and not very hard to spot. Check for serial number beginning from the letter "Z". Its either ZA, ZB or ZC and almost all Malaysia denomination is using the same serial letter "Z" for replacement. Replacement note is banknote that been issued to replace your torn banknote.

The most profitable and hard to find banknote is RM1 denomination banknote that been signed by Tan Sri Dato' Seri Ali Abul Hassan. Make sure if you received any RM1 denomination, please check the signature. The RM1 banknote you see here is signed by Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr. Zeti Abdul Aziz. The value of the RM1 signed by Tan Sri Ali Abul Hassan can exceed a value of RM500.00 a piece for Uncirculated condition. I know a friend who got lucky and have 200 pieces of this banknote in Uncirculated condition. I don't think he will sell this item until he can get RM1000.00 a piece for the price.

If you ever get your hand on this banknote, please don't put them in your wallet or in your pocket. The banknote may get folded and have sign of wear on them. This will decrease the value of your banknote. Ensure that the surface that you put your banknote is clean and free from liquid and dust. Enjoy your banknote hunting.
