£5 Pudsey Bear notes back in Spink Sale

Limited edition Pudsey Bear £5 banknote will be back in Spink sale which will take place on the 4th October 2016 in London. The Bank of Scotland's first polymer note will be auctioned off to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

Pudsey Bear

At the start of the auction (lots 2204 - 2288), Spink are offering a sizable group of low numbers from the brand new Bank of Scotland Polymer £5. This shares many design elements with the Pudsey issue of 2015, which Spink also offered, but this is the general issue rather than a limited design. It is a lovely design, and the notes deserve to be hotly contested.

As a bonus, and for those who missed out in the December auction, the only four remaining PUDSEY notes will be offered, including just one note where the buyer can choose a personalised number (subject to the Bank's approval). PUDSEY32, PUDSEY35 and PUDSEY39 will be sold as a matching pair with the general issue note. There are a wide range of serial numbers on offer, with something to suit all collectors. As previously, the proceeds will benefit BBC Children in Need.

In addition to the mammoth World Banknotes auction, Spink have also managed to put together a sizable British Banknotes sale, the majority of which is made up of Scottish material. In fact, for the first time, Spink have even given Scotland pride of place at the start of the catalogue. These notes come from many consigners, but most notably from the Bank of Scotland, and The Institute of Bankers in Scotland.

Western Bank of Scotland

As Spink have mentioned, the sale contains the collection of the Institute of Bankers in Scotland, which is the largest single Scottish group Spink have offered for many years, and consists of a wide range of issued notes, proofs, specimens and other material spanning the full age and range of Scottish Banks. The note pictured on page 15 (lot 2681), a very rare Western Bank of Scotland £1 of 1847, is representative of the quality of the collection and Spink are sure there will be many notes in there for even advanced collectors.

The Institute is the oldest institute of bankers in the world, founded in 1875, and the only remaining banking institute in the UK. Whilst they have grown well beyond Scotland, and now have 30,000 members in more than 50 countries, the Institute remains true to their founding principle of enhancing and sustaining professional standards in banking for the public interest.

In the introduction to the first issue of the Institute's journal, published more than a century ago, their then President Alexander Bogie wrote that: "There has never been a time in the history of banking more interesting than the present to the student of the great science of finance, no period more filled by problems theoretical and practical. It seems as if in Scotland especially Spink stand at a parting of the ways, when only the ethical principles, which made our Scottish banking system foremost at one time amongst those of civilised peoples, are to remain to us as the perpetual foundation on which new ideas and modes of practice are to be raised ..."

This sale will help support the aspirations of a new generation of professional bankers, and all proceeds will be used to help establish the Chartered Banker 2025 Foundation, which will support young people committed to a professional career in banking but who need help to achieve their aspirations.
