Malaysia 1st series coins

Malaysia 1st series of "SEN" coins were introduced in 12 June 1967 in denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, 50 sen, followed by the introduction of the 1 ringgit coin (which continued to use the $ symbol and is the largest coin in the series) in 1 May 1971. Even though the new Parlimen coins has been used, the coins and banknotes for Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya and British Borneo still circulated with new Malaysia coins until 16 January 1969, when the old Malaya currency legal tender value has been ceased.

parlimen coin

The initial under the parlimen building is exactly an initial for Geoffrey Colley, Malaysia Parlimen coin designer. Some people mistakenly think the initial is for "Government Coin". While, some sellers will tell you that a parlimen coins without a GC initial have a higher price then your normal coins. They will tell you that it is a rare variety because it don't have a "Mint Mark". Parlimen coins without GC initial are just normal error coins with a weak dies. You can easily find them if you keep a lot of Parlimen coins.

On the obverse of the coins for 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen show Malaysia Parliament building as a symbol of democracy. A crescent moon and 13 pointed star is taken from the flag of Malaysia, representing Malaysia as an Islamic nation and 13 states in Malaysia. The design for ringgit coin is a little bit different from other coins; crescent moon and the pointed star is bigger with 14 pointed star (13 states and a federal territory). On the reverse show the denomination printed in the middle and hibiscus, the national flower of Malaysia at the side.
