A suggestion for BNM Commemorative coin

These are some of my suggestion to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) for commemorative coin that they should minted in the future. Why do I making this suggestion? Mostly because BNM produce low commemorative sets of design every year (only 3 this year, correct me if I am wrong). Some of their design is not even appealing to collectors. For me, some of the anniversary that they commemorate are not worth to collect. 125th Anniversary of Jabatan Ukur dan Pemetaan Malaysia (JUPEM) for example, its sound nice to educate public about the department contribution to Malaysia. But is it worth to put it on coins?

Here are some of my suggestion for BNM. I welcome everyone to add a suggestion of your own and wish any of the BNM design department people read this and consider them in our future collection:

1. 50th years of Zoo Negara.

Zoo Negara (literally National Zoo in Malay) will be 50 years old on 14 November 2013. It is the oldest zoo in this country and already visited by millions of Malaysian and tourist in this country. The park is managed by a non-governmental organization known as the Malaysian Zoological Society. The zoo located on 110 acres (45 ha) of land in Ulu Klang, near Taman Melawati, in north-east Kuala Lumpur.

2. Sabah Rafflesia flowers.

Do you know that there are 3 types of Rafflesia that can be found in Sabah:
i. Rafflesia keithii Meijer
ii. Rafflesia pricei Meijer
iii. Rafflesia tengku-adlinii Salleh & Latiff

Rafflesia is the official flower for Sabah. You can find and see Rafflesia flower at places such as Poring Hot Springs at the Kinabalu Park and Tambunan Rafflesia Reserve in Sabah.

3. Malaysia Prime Minister series.

Malaysia had gain independence since 31 August 1957. Until now, there are six people who had held the position of Malaysia Prime Minister (Perdana Menteri in Malay). Whenever there is a new appointment of a prime minister, BNM should mint a coin to commemorate that occasion. We don't get a new Prime Minister everyday, right? As what I write before, until know, there is no single coin with Tun Dr. Mahathir face on it.

4. Malaysia famous building.

We have many famous building that should be in BNM designs. Sultan Abdul Samad building for example is already over 116 years old and became the focus during the independence celebrations. It was here, the Union Jack flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957. The Petronas Twin Towers (also known as the Petronas Towers or KLCC) are skyscrapers and twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 until surpassed by Taipei 101, but remain the tallest twin buildings in the world.

5. Malaysia Warriors- Dato Maharajalela, Mat Kilau, Rentap, Mat Salleh etc.

These countries also have many heroes@warriors who are involved with the independence of Malaysia. These freedom fighters should be put on coins

Dato Maharaja Lela was a Malay nationalist from Perak. Dato Maharaja Lela was a leader who later led the struggle against the British in Perak. He is famous for his planned to assassinate James Wheller Woodfird Birch (JWW Birch), the British Resident of Perak. Birch was killed on 2 November 1875 by Dato Maharaja Lela and his assistant Sepuntum in Pasir Salak.

Rentap or Libau (died 1863) was a famous Iban warrior in Sarawak during the Brooke White Rajah era. Rentap rebellion was due to the James Brooke's action of eliminating the Ibans in Skrang because he thought they were pirates.

Datu Muhammad Salleh or better known as Mat Salleh is famous for a series of major disturbances in North Borneo, now the Malaysian state of Sabah, from 1894 to 1900. The rebellions started when British North Borneo Company imposing a new rules on the Sugud River region; taxes and the requirement for the keris and boat licences.

One of big problem for collector in Malaysia, everytime there is a new commemorative sets come into market, there are not enough gold coins for small buyer like me. Even if BNM minted 500 gold sets for that design, most of the time only few sets can be bought directly from BNM. BNM should make sure an equal right for everyone. Selling them directly to big time buyer directly without regulations is just making the rich became richer. BNM should try minted a color coin with an attractive design in the future. The engraver, designer and mint of the coins should also be included in the Technical Specification of BNM collection. This is just a suggestion and my personal views.

What do you think?

Error in new peso notes

The new generation peso banknotes, rolled out earlier this month and containing the signature of President Benigno Aquino who took office this year, come out with a few error spectacularly in the graphics department. The reverse side of the new 500 peso bill features a rare native bird, the blue-naped parrot, with its red beak incorrectly rendered in yellow and the tail feathers underneath coloured green instead of yellow. A map on the bill (which also carries portraits of Aquino's late parents) mislocates Saint Paul's, a subterranean river that is designated as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Photo by The Straits Times Singapore: President Benigno Aquino III holds the new design of Philippine pesos

"Yes, they have made a very big booboo on the parrot," said Jon Villasper, a cartographer who is also a member of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines.

"Aside from that, they misplaced Tubbataha reef by around 400 kilometres and Batanes is not on the map. I believe they also misplaced Saint Paul's? subterranean river," he told AFP by email.

Printed on the 1,000 peso bill is a map locating the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, another prized Philippine UNESCO world heritage site, on or near Malaysian territorial waters. The map of the Philippines which features on six different bills re-draws the country's territory to place its northern limit 150 kilometres south of the actual line and exclude the Batanes island group.

Ghelynne Avril del Rosario, a Manila lawyer, said the mistakes echoed a re-branding campaign by the tourism ministry that was withdrawn last month amid charges that its slogan was forgettable, it plagiarised Poland's campaign and the URL of its website was close to that of a pornographic site. Like the campaign, the bills are now fodder for ridicule on Internet social networking sites, Rosario told AFP.

"Just like scrapping the 'Pilipinas Kay Ganda (Philippines What a Beauty) slogan, let's scrap the new peso notes as well!" she said.

Central bank spokeswoman Fe de la Cruz acknowledged the criticism, but said space constraints limited the artist's room for manoeuvre.

"In choosing the design..., we are always guided by our commitment to enrich the appreciation and knowledge of the Filipinos we honour on our banknotes, as well as the unique sites and species our country should be proud of," she said.

"For our banknotes we used an artist's rendition of the Philippine map that by virtue of space and aesthetics does not reflect all of our islands and the precise coordinates of each site," she told AFP.

"Nevetheless, we appreciate constructive comments and we will take these into account moving forward."

It was not the first time the central bank has been left red-faced over currency design. It was forced in 2005 to withdraw bills that misspelled the name of Gloria Arroyo, Aquino's predecessor as president. The bill, which called her Gloria Arrovo, became a much sought after collectors' item.

Critics Slam Royal Wedding Coin

An official coin of Prince William and Kate Middleton wedding has been receiving so many critics due to the poor design. the coin has been minted by Royal Mint and has been authorised by the Channel Island of Alderney with a denomination of £5. The reverse design will feature Prince William and Catherine Middleton portrait by Matthew Bonaccorsi. The obverse will feature the Queen’s portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. The special betrothal design has received Royal approval from Prince William and Her Majesty The Queen.

Images of the couple on the memento bear little resemblance to either the prince or his 28-year-old betrothed. Middleton appears plump in the face and lips and has bags under her eyes. Some critics claim William looks like Al Gore. Ingrid Seward of Majesty magazine told Britain's Sky News on Thursday it was "ridiculous" that the images were so poor. But Dickie Arbiter, a former royal spokesman, says it's often difficult to produce accurate images on a coin.

In my opinion, the design that we can found in Daily Mail News is far much better then the official coin design. I am not sure where they get this but its sure more beautiful then the official design. Wish Royal Mint will change to a better design. What do you think?

An international panel of judges selected a gold White Rhino, 1 ounce, 100-rand coin from the South Africa Mint Natura series as the winner for The 2011 Coin of the Year Award. The award will be given on 29 January 2011 at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany. The judging panel selected the coin from a field of 10 category winners that had been chosen in the first round of voting that had been conducted in November. This year’s competition for 2009-dated coins began with a field of 93 coins issued by mints worldwide.

The coin has a diameter of 32.7mm and a mintage of 4,000. Obverse of the 2009-dated coin was designed by N. van Niekerk and M.J. Scheepers. The reverse was designed by van Niekerk and A. Minnie. The common obverse depicts the White Rhinocerous (Ceratotherium simum). The word Rhinoceros means "nose-horn". The horn is not actually a horn but consists of thickly matted hair consisting of Keratin – a chemical substance that our fingernails are made of. The white rhino is not white (it is actually grey) and has been misnamed due to misinterpretation. Because this species is a true grazer its mouth is wide and square lipped and the first Afrikaners named it "wide-mouthed" or "wyd mond". "Wyd/weit" was translated incorrectly as "white". read: South Africa Mint.

New De La Rue Chief

De La Rue, the world's largest printer of banknotes that is currently mulling a takeover approach from a French rival, today announce that it had chosen Tim Cobbold to be its new chief executive. Cobbold, former chief executive of British power systems group Chloride, is taking over from James Hussey, who resigned in August after De La Rue revealed banknote production failures. The appointment comes one week after French banknote printer and chip card maker Oberthur announced a takeover bid for De La Rue worth about 900 million pounds (1.1 billion euros, 1.4 billion dollars).

Photo: Tim Cobbold

"We are delighted that Tim will be joining De La Rue as chief executive on 1 January," the British group's interim chief executive Nicholas Brookes said in a statement.

"His wealth of experience, including of international business at the most senior level, will be invaluable to De La Rue both in the short term as we work to resolve current uncertainties and in the longer term as we continue to build our global brand and international customer base."

De La Rue, which employs 4,000 staff across 24 countries, has struggled to overcome the impact of paper production irregularities that hit the company earlier this year.

Cobbold said he was looking forward "to demonstrating De La Rue's fundamental value by building on its core strengths as an independent company and growing value for its shareholders".

August this year, James Hussey, the chief executive of banknote printer De La Rue quit the firm after production at the paper factory halted for failing to meet quality standards. The paper factory in question is located in Hampshire, where the company also has its headquarters. Production at the facility was suspended on 21 July. Early October De La Rue confirmed employees faked the results of quality control tests on paper used for banknotes, but refused to name the clients affected.

What I want for Christmas

Today, someone asked me what I want for Christmas? I am not celebrating Christmas and I don't know what answer should I give. When I visiting Royal Mint website today, I found out about their Ultimate Christmas Cracker. I know for sure, this is what I want for Christmas. A normal cracker consists of a cardboard tube wrapped in a brightly decorated twist of paper, making it resemble an over sized sweet-wrapper. The cracker is pulled by two people, and, much in the manner of a wishbone, the cracker splits unevenly. The split is accompanied by a small bang produced by the effect of friction on a chemically impregnated card strip (similar to that used in a cap gun).

This Royal Mint Ultimate Christmas Cracker inspired by the five golden rings this metal cracker certainly oozes sheer extravagance . Metallic gold in colour, substantial in weight and decorated with two lavish gold bows, it opens up to reveal five glistening £5 Gold Sovereigns each struck to Brilliant Uncirculated standard and accompanied with their individual Certificates of Authenticity. To indulge yourself with luxury and to be the one lucky owner of this unique and exclusive cracker, which is on sale for £10,000, you can call Royal Mint at 0845 60 88 300 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 4pm Friday. You can also read more about this exclusive gift at Royal Mint website.

A great gift that is not affordable for everyone. The upcoming holiday season is just around the corner, and everyone is in a rush to find a gift to their love one. If someone asked me what I want for Christmas again, I will answer "Royal Mint Ultimate Christmas Cracker".

Error in 100 dollar US notes

A printing error has forced the US to stockpile $110bn (£69.78bn) in new $100 notes until officials can sort and destroy the flawed bills. A snag in the printing process left up to 30% of the notes with a blank patch on the face, US network CNBC reported. Officials are working to devise a mechanical process to sort the flawed bills. Doing so by hand would take up to 30 years, officials said. The new, high-security notes were to begin circulating in February 2011.

Photo by newmoney.gov: obverse of $100 dollar.

"We are confident that a very high proportion of the notes will be fit for circulation," Treasury Department spokeswoman Darlene Anderson said.

The bills, which represent an estimated one-tenth of the value of all US currency in circulation, are being held in US government facilities in Washington DC and Fort Worth in the state of Texas. They are the latest in a series of redesigns of US currency intended to fight counterfeiting. The bills are also the first to bear the signature of President Barack Obama's Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner. US news media reported the high-quality cotton and linen fibre stock creased during production of some of the bills, yielding a portion that was not printed.

A statement by Federal Reserve before this stated the new bills circulating date will be delay. The same report by The Federal Reserve also said that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which produces dollars, discovered a problem with "sporadic creasing" of the paper during printing of the 100 dollar note. The technical glitch means that there will not be enough of the new bills to begin distributing them as planned.

Oberthur bid for De La Rue rejected

Banknote printer De La Rue recently rejected a £750m bid approach from French rival Oberthur Technologies. The move by the company board should make their share in big demand now. The firm said the offer 'undervalued' its shares, which have already crashed this year after it revealed a paper batch quality problem with its biggest customer, widely thought to be India's central bank.

Oberthur, which in 1999 acquired the smartcard division of De La Rue, is now believed to be weighing up its options. It could decide to increase its offer and if it does, De La Rue's shareholders, including the Prudential and M&G, could put pressure on the board to accept. A French takeover of De La Rue would surely reignite the ongoing debate about the foreign ownership of British companies, which has raged ever since the controversial takeover of Cadbury by Kraft Foods.

The Government might also be unhappy with the prospect of the production of sterling or biometric passports transferring across the Channel. The Bank of England and the UK Passport Agency are two of De La Rue's most important customers. Acquisitive industrial company Melrose has also been tipped as a possible buyer of De La Rue, which has rendered itself vulnerable to a takeover following an horrendous year.

Its shares collapsed from £10plus to a year's low of 541p on profits warnings and news of problems at its plant in Overton, Hampshire, that have cost £35m in lost sales and other charges. They have rallied to 647.5p on hopes that a predator will put it out of its misery. City analysts have begun to recommend the stock to clients on consideration of the company's recovery potential.

Broker Collins Stewart says De La Rue's assets are unique, especially the intangible ones. The company print s money for 150 countries. A large chunk of them are former British colonies where the relationship goes back decades. on brand it is considered the world leader and is at the forefront of technological investment to keep ahead of the counterfeiters. The broker values the group at £728m (or 736p a share) so Oberthur will have to substantially increase its offer before the De La Rue board agrees to a deal. Both companies last night refused to comment on the speculation.

A history of gold by The Telegraph

Gold is the most popular metal as an investment. Investors generally buy gold as a hedge or safe haven against any economic crises. While searching for any new news yesterday, I found a "History of gold" post by The Telegraph. It tells the history of gold between the timeline. Gold had been going up over USD$1400 per ounces this year and most probably will not stop since many people fear about the inflation and financial crises.

worlds first coin,lydian lion

3600 BC - First smelting of gold
Egyptian goldsmiths carry out the first melting or fusing of ores in order to separate the metals inside. They use blowpipes made from fire-resistant clay to heat the smelting furnace.

2600 BC - Early gold jewellery
Goldsmiths of ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) craft one of the earliest pieces of gold jewellery, a burial headdress of lapis and carnelian beads with willow leaf-shaped gold pendants.

1223 BC - Creation of Tutankhamun's funeral mask
Instantly recognised the world over, the funeral mask of Tutankhamun is a triumph of gold craftsmanship from the ancient world.

564 BC - First international gold currency created
King Croesus develops improved gold refining techniques, permitting him to mint the world's first standardised gold currency. Their uniform gold content allows 'Croesids' to become universally recognised and traded with confidence.

1300 - Hallmarking practice established
The world's first hallmarking system, scrutinising and guaranteeing the quality of precious metal, is established at Goldsmith's Hall in London - where London's Assay Office is still located today.

1370 - The Great Bullion Famine begins
During the years 1370-1420, various major mines around Europe become completely exhausted. Mining and production of gold declines sharply throughout the region in a period known as 'The Great Bullion Famine'.

1717 - UK gold standard commences
Britain moves onto a de facto pure gold standard, as the government links the currency to gold at a fixed rate (establishing a mint price of 77 shillings, 10-and-a-half pennies per ounce of gold).

1848 - California Gold Rush begins
John Marshall discovers gold flakes while building a sawmill near Sacramento, California. The greatest gold rush of all time follows as 40,000 diggers flock to California from around the world.

1885 - South African gold rush begins
While digging up stones to build a house, Australian miner George Harrison finds gold ore on Langlaagte farm near Johannesburg. Miners flock to the region. South Africa will go on to become the source of 40pc of the world's gold.

1870-1900 - Adoption of gold standard
All major countries other than China switch to the gold standard, linking their currencies to gold. The practice of bimetallism is abandoned.

1925 - Gold standard returns
The UK returns to the gold standard at pre-war parity of $4.86=£1 with sterling convertible to gold at 77sh 10.5d per standard ounce. This follows the country's departure from the gold standard six years previously at the outbreak of the First World War.

1933 - Roosevelt suspends gold
President Roosevelt suspends US dollar convertibility to gold (gold at US$20.67/oz). The export of all transactions in, and the holding of gold by private individuals, is forbidden. Presidential proclamation makes the dollar convertible again in January 1934 at a new price of $35 per troy ounce.

1939 - Second World War closes gold market
The London gold market is closed on the outbreak of war, as at the beginning of the Second World War. The world will later return to a fixed system of exchange rates, this time with currencies fixed to the dollar and the dollar convertible into gold.

1961 - First gold in space
The first manned space flight uses gold to protect sensitive instruments from radiation. In 1980, 41kgs of gold is included in space shuttle construction through brazing alloys, fuel cell fabrication and electrical contacts.

1967 - First South African Krugerrand
The Krugerrand is introduced in 1967, as a vehicle for private ownership of gold. This iconic coin is actually intended for circulation as currency.

1971 - Gold window closed
The Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates comes to an end as President Nixon "closes the gold window", suspending US dollar convertibility to gold. The world enters its present day system of floating exchange rates.

1999 - First Central Bank Gold Agreement
The First Central Bank Gold Agreement (CBGA) is agreed. 15 European central banks declare that gold will remain an important element of their reserves and collectively cap gold sales at 400 tonnes per year over next five years.

2004 - Launch of SPDR Gold Shares
The market is transformed by an innovative, secure and easy way to access the gold market. Seven years later SPDR exceeds $55bn in assets under management.

2009 - Central banks return to buying
In the second quarter of the year, central banks collectively become net purchasers of gold for the first time in two decades. This reflects a combination of slowing sales from European banks and growing purchases by emerging market countries.

2010 - Gold price sustains record highs
Fiat currencies are undermined by inflation fears and successive financial crises. The London pm fix achieves 35 separate successive highs in the year to date.

Alert: Hong Kong Bullion Scam

Hong Kong's myriad jewellers and pawn shops have been hammered by a gold scam after unwittingly buying hundreds of ounces of bogus bullion, a report said Thursday. The Financial Times described the swindle as "one of the most sophisticated scams to hit the Chinese territory's gold market in decades", and comes as the price of gold sits around record highs around 1,400 US dollars an ounce.

Photo by Reuters: Fake gold scam

"It's a very good fake," Haywood Cheung, president of the Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society, Hong Kong's gold exchange, told the newspaper.

Cheung told the FT that jewellers and pawn shops in the gold-mad city have discovered at least 200 ounces of fake bullion (worth about 280,000 US dollars) so far this year. But he estimated that 10 times that figure could be making its way through the city's retail market, the paper said.

Among the fakes was a specimen with pure gold coating that masked a complex alloy with similar properties to the precious metal, suggesting fraudsters used sophisticated techniques and equipment, according to the report. From some of the scam, it is discovered that they were using a pure gold coating with 51% gold alloy with seven other alloy; osmium, iridium, ruthenium, copper, nickel, iron & rhodium. The fakes are difficult to detect by sight or touch, and are usually revealed by high-tech tests involving high temperatures and chemicals, the report said.

The Luk Fook Group, one of the city's biggest jewellers, was also tricked into buying almost 12,000 US dollars worth of fake gold until it discovered the scam and alerted its retail stores, the paper said. The scam targeted the sale of scrap gold to jewellers, not the bigger market for gold bars which is more rigorously controlled, the paper said.
