100 dollars watermelon note for auction in Long Beach by Heritage Auction. The February Long Beach Heritage Signature Auction will include a special fifty lot Signature Currency Auction. One of the banknote being offered in the auction is the $100 Watermelon Note. The name "Watermelon note" came from the number 100 on the back of the $100 1890 Treasury notes and the number 1000 on the back of the $1000 (World most expensive banknote) were designed resembles the outside rind of a watermelon. This rare and wonderful Watermelon note will cross the auction block on 3 February 2012 and carries an estimate of $150,000 and up.

The portrait on the face of the $100 is that of Andrew Farragut (1801-70), who famously was reported to have stated "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" during the Civil War when the Union ships under his command sealed off Mobile Bay and thus cut off the Confederate blockade running that was taking place. Prior to that, he led the forces that captured New Orleans. He was only nine years old when he entered the navy and served in the War of 1812. Farragut was the first person to hold the rank of admiral in the United States Navy.

A mere 120,000 of the $100 1890 Treasury Notes were printed. With only about three dozen surviving examples of this denomination, and a quarter of that number held in institutional collections, very few are available to meet collector demand, as evidenced by the fact that this is the only example that has been offered at auction since 2008. The note retains original surfaces, and the few pinholes that are observed have not been restored, a refreshing departure for these types of notes that have often been invasively rebuilt over the years.

I suppose to write about the BNM Online shop petition today but a comment by my fellow blogger, get my attention; "coin collecting a very expensive hobby?" In my opinion, it depends on what you collect. Sometime, you don't need to waste a single cent from your pocket, just keep that 1 sen in a safe place and wait for 40 years. As you can see in this picture, you can easily sell this coin for RM50 now. In 1968, this coin maybe worth RM1 for collector. At that time, you maybe think all this collectors are crazy buying this 1 sen denomination coin at a very high price. You will not think like that today, would you?

You can also start teaching your kids to collect coins for a very small budget, let say RM50 a month. Collecting coins doesn't means you need to buy what other collectors are buying. Try looking at the world circulation coins that you can get with that RM50. Maybe you can start with a one cent/penny coins. You can still get those coins for RM1-RM5 a piece. You can bring your kids hunting for coins in the weekends. If you don't know where you can find a coins in Malaysia, you can read this; where to find coins in Malaysia. Make sure you already bought coin holder and coin album for your kids. For other kids project, you can read my old posts about them here:

Coin collecting will be expensive if you start to collect rare and error coins but you still can collect them if you get a proper knowledge about error and rare Malaysia coins. For more knowledge about Malaysia error and rare coins, you can go to sifu Dickson blog; Niewmismatic error coins. He is one of Malaysia error coins expert and already wrote over 100 articles about Malaysia error coins. Study what he wrote in his blog and start looking at any Malaysia coins that you can find. Some rare error coins can go up to hundreds ringgit and it don't cost you anything. You maybe have error and rare Malaysia coins right now without realizing it.

You can also collecting coins according to their years, it will only cost you face value of the coins. Just make sure, they're some years Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) don't produce or mint coins. You can find out more about Malaysia coins issue at; No issue Malaysia coins. Just look for the best looking coins you can find and put it in coin album. You maybe need to buy coin holder and coin album to make sure your coins keep on shining in the future.

They're many way you can start collecting but most non collector will not realize that. Whatever coins you want to collect, it will be a rewarding hobby. You just need to be patient and take care your coins. You don't need to clean them to make it shiny and beautiful. For my non collector friends out there, will you still consider coin collecting as an expensive hobby?

What can you get for RM68?

Nowadays, what can you get for RM68? A monthly subscription fee for Celcom Broadband or Digi Smart Plan? A facial spa and body treatment coupon? A bucket of spicy Kentucky Fried Chicken? Will you consider to pay RM68 for 4 pieces of tin coins? If you're tin coins collector, you most probably will buy them since it is a very reasonable price but not all Malaysia collectors like to collect tin coins, right? Malaysia tin coins history bring us back to the establishment of this country. It will be a big loss to Malaysian collector who don't collect them.

I am still new in tin coins collecting. I started to collect them because you can still buy tin coins at a very cheap price compare to other old coins. Their price has not gone sky rocket since many collector don't see its potential. Many Malaysian collectors are more on Malaysia banknote, Prefix banknote, Malaysia error coins and silver coins. Dickson Niewmismatic offer a very reasonable price of tin coins at RM68 per set of 4. It isn't a complete set but it will be a good start for new tin coins collector. Tin coins normally sell for RM20-RM45 a piece.

Where to get Malaysia new currency? A foreign readers asked me, "I am interested in your country new currency design, they're beautiful and unique in its own way but can you tell me where can I get them for my collection?" Many of you might had been reading my posts about Malaysia new currency, Malaysia 4th series banknote and Malaysia 3rd series coins. The coins already in circulation from 16 January 2012. The banknotes will only come into circulation in the middle of 2012. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) only sell them at their branches nationwide and don't have any online shop (it will be helpful if you help sign our petition; we want BNM online shop).

That doesn't mean you need to go to Malaysia to buy them. You can still buy them online in eBay.com.my for a small premium price. Just go to eBay and look for "Malaysia Banknote" or "Malaysia coin". The premier banknote (6 in 1 banknote set) normally sell at MYR450 a piece and for the Malaysia 3rd series coin card the price is around MYR15 excluding postage and other charges. Some sellers might not sell their collection outside Malaysia, you can message them and asked if they want to send it to your country.

Another way to buy the new Malaysia money is from Malaysia Dealers. You can read my list of Malaysia Numismatic dealers at Coin dealer Malaysia. I only knew two dealers who are willing to entertain foreign buyers, you can called or email them asking for their quote price:

No more replica coins in eBay

eBay announce via email on 17 January, no more replica coins in eBay starting 20 February 2012.eBay define replica coins as a copy or reproduction of an actual coin, including US, foreign and other historic coins. This includes any replica coin whether it is permanently incused with “COPY” or “REPLICA”. This also includes oversized and mini replica coins and replica coins made into belt buckles and jewelry. There are also rumors going around that plated silver coins will be next. I am not a fan of replica coins but a friend of mine who is a seller, will badly affected by the sudden move by eBay. Many collectors support the move by eBay since they're many people selling copy coins as original and many newbies who don't know will be falling in their traps. They're also cases some they sell the coins as COPY but send the coins without COPY stamped on the coins.

This year will be the year of the water dragon, the fifth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar dragon include 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012. Those born under the influence of this sign are said to be confident, enterprising, independent, self-assured, brave, and passionate. I am wishing everyone a prosperous and peaceful dragon year 2012. To all my collector friends, wish the dragon year will give you many things to add in your collection.

Some of my friends will be driving back to their hometown today but most of you might be driving back on Saturday, wish you all have a safe journey. Don't drink and drive, drive slowly. Police will be watching you in "ops sikap". Plan your journey well and make sure you bring your car to your mechanic for inspection.

Thank you BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia) for the recent Malaysia comemmorative banknotes sales bold move. Asking everyone who want to buy the commemorative to register their name and identity card really help every collector to get at least one piece of the premier series. I hope you will keep on doing this in the future and hopefully every BNM branches can share the list. Look like BNM has change a lot of things in their commemorative sales system. Most of it I cannot confirm and cannot share it in here but the new moves really help collectors like me who don't want to buy from dealer.

BNM new rules:

Effective 3rd January 2012, all purchases of the new commemorative banknotes sets will require you to register your name in our system and present your MyKad/MyKid to us. For foreigners, you will have to present your passport. Once registered and cleared by the system, you may purchase the maximum quantity of the sets (i.e ONLY 1 set for premium and 5 sets EACH for the set of 2 and set of 1). Otherwise you will need to come in a week's time to make another purchase. This practice is standardised at all counters (HQ and branches). We hope everyone will follow this simple rule so that many people will have an equal chance to buy the sets. Thank you... and yes, ALL sets are still AVAILABLE for purchase.

On the first week of the launch, people need to stand in a line for almost 2 hours to get the new notes. When BNM change the sales system, we don't need to stand for to long anymore. It prevent dealers to get as many sets as they want and it help collector to get the new notes. Most of us "real collector not investor" salute the move by BNM. On the first week of the new comemmorative sales, we can also see many seller gain an instant big profit from the premier sets. The price slightly going down after many collectors knew that they still can get the premier sets from BNM.

In my recent meet up with sifu Dickson Niew, he said "BNM should start selling online but collector must register in their system to buy the coin/banknote collection". its a good move and help all collectors with no BNM branches in their states to get any new collection by BNM but will collectors support the idea? Since 9 December 2011, I start a petition, we want BNM online shop but not many collector support the petition, only 30 people signed the petition so far. You can read it in this post: We want BNM online shop petition. Without support by collector, all the BNM online shop suggestion will only became a fantasy.

Anyone received new Malaysia coins?

Anyone received new Malaysia coins in circulation today? You most probably will get the new coins from your bank, pasar malam (night market), wet market or from a friends who in a shock after seeing the beautiful coins in its hands. In an early statement by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), new coin start circulate 16 January 2012. The new coins to be introduced into circulation in phases are legal tender and will co-circulate with the old series. The old Bunga Raya coins and Parliament coins series will be gradually phased out. You can still use the old coins in your dailly transaction.

Thank you to Bank Negara Malaysia for the beautiful Malaysia coin 2012 designs. I really like the new 50 sen design, hope it will help to reduce counterfeiting. The main concern for everyone with the new coins coming into circulation is if vending machine will accept it. BNM in its statement said machine vendors had been given sufficient time to calibrate their machines to accept these new coins. Almost all the new coins are smaller and lighter then the old coins. Most vending machine vendors in Malaysia will only calibrate their machine after the new coins start to circulate.

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) group director for Rail Division, Khairani Mohamed in a statement to Bernama said they will only completed their machine calibration for the new coins in mid-March. Commuters using Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) for single journey tickets on the LRT will need to continue using the old coins before the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) Integrated Ticket System are upgraded to accept the new coins issued by BNM. You can change your new coins for the old coins, at the ticketing counter.

The new AFC TVMs will not be able to accept new coins issued by BNM until all the equipment has been upgraded and calibrated, as we do not want to compromise on the convenience and comfort of our commuters. Khairani said INDRA-IRIS AFC Consortium (IIAC), the contractor for the project, had been asked to make their recommendations and take immediate steps to upgrade the system to allow the calibration for the new coins and bank notes. For the new bank notes, which are scheduled to be issued out by BNM in June, Khairani said the TVMs should be able to accept the new bank notes by July upon completion of the calibration exercise. Under the AFC Integrated Ticketing System, Rapidkl operates 283 Ticket Vending Machines, which are strategically located within its 49 LRT stations and 11 monorail stations.

New Loonies, Toonies unveil soon

Last Friday, Canada government announced in the official Canada Gazette that Canada's mint will soon unveil one-dollar and two-dollar coins made from brass-plated steel, replacing more expensive nickel cores.The new coins will be slightly lighter, Can$16 million (US$16 million) cheaper to produce and ship, and harder to counterfeit. However, the change will cost coin-operated industries up to $40 million to recalibrate vending machines to recognize the new coinage. The mining sector will also be hit as global nickel demand falls by about 539 metric tonnes per year, or 0.05 percent. The Royal Canadian Mint has produced more than one billion loonies, as the one dollar coins are called, and over 700 billion toonies, the two-dollar coins, since they were introduced in 1987 and 1996, respectively.

Canada Toonies

In March last year, it was reported that $1 and $2 coins would alter their composition and include several high-tech security features, such as a lasermark, a virtual image, an electromagnetic signal and edge lettering, making the already secure coins even more difficult to counterfeit. The $1 coin will continue to be yellow and, so it can easily be identified by the visually impaired, it will remain 11-sided. However, it would have an electromagnetic signal to discourage the use of counterfeit coins, or “slugs,” and a lasermark image will appear on the reverse. The $2 coin will be even higher-tech. It will continue to be two colours, but will be thinner to accommodate lettering along the edge of the coin. It will have an electromagnetic signal and a lasermark, as well as a virtual image on the reverse. The new Loonies and Toonies will be lighter but the thickness will be the same with lettering added to the ridged edges of Toonies.

Canada Loonies

As new Loonies and Toonies circulate, older, heavier coins will be removed from circulation to be melted down and the metal reused, Royal Canadian Mint spokesman Alex Reeves said. The new process, still being finalized, will also incorporate improved, state-of-the-art engraving. Canada has been phasing nickel out of coins for some time. The one, five, 10, 25 and 50 cent pieces produced in recent years have been of multi-ply plated steel alloy. To date, the move has saved the government an estimated $250 million. The current one and two dollar Canadian coins are manufactured from nickel alloy, which in recent years, has experienced increased volatility in pricing, reaching record-high levels. Over the last decade, the London Metal Exchange (LME) price for nickel has fluctuated over 1,000 per cent and is currently trading at nearly four times higher than it was in 2000.

A friend MMS me yesterday and asked, "Do you know this BNM girl? Can you find information about her because I think I am falling in love with her. Everytime new commemorative coins or banknotes by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), she will be the model, holding the commemorative." She have become one of the celebrity for Malaysia collectors. Many of my friends also talk about her in forum, facebook or even when I meet up with them during our monthly meeting. Some of them coming to BNM, hoping to meet her while buying the new commemorative banknotes. Maybe that all because we saw many pictures of her last year.

I do some searching for that particular friend, I found many information about her. Her name is Noor Aimah Mohd Nor, 32 years old. She is actually a blogger too and have some blogs that already not active. Her current blog is at Tipahbebel.blogspot.com. Look like she has been giving some inside info about the new commemoratives all this while. To all my collector friends who are dreaming to meet her at the BNM counter, she don't work there. I found many more informations about her but since it is personal information, sorry, I will not share them with anyone but you can asked her yourself at tipahvogue@gmail.com. Macao Dragon Banknote

Yesterday, The Bank of Macao has issued a Macao Dragon Banknote to celebrate the year of the dragon. Bank of China and Banco Nacional Ultramarino respectively issued a piece of the commemorative 10 Pataca banknote on Thursday to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dragon. The banknote is featured by Chinese paper-cut dragon on the face and the building of Bank of Macao or the building of Banco Nacional Ultramarino on the back. In addition, the Ma Zu temple in Macao has been adopted as the foil scene.

New Thailand banknotes 16 series

Today, Bank of Thailand announced the introduction of the new series of Thai banknotes (Series 16) into circulation. The announcement made by Mr. Prasarn Trairatvorakul, Governor of the Bank of Thailand in their press release. The denominational range of the new series, which retains the sizes and the colors of the current series (Series 15), consists of 20-Baht, 50-Baht, 100-Baht, 500-Baht, and 1000-Baht. Each denomination of the new banknotes will be issued separately, with intervals between releases, so it will take several years until all denominations are introduced. The 50-Baht denomination banknote is the first to be launched into circulation on 18 January 2012.

The 50 Baht banknote contains the following key security features:

1. The watermark depicting the portrait of the present King appears alongside the denominational electrotype reading “๕๐”, clearly visible when viewed against the light.

2. The windowed color-shift security thread located vertically like stitches on the back of the note changes its color from dark blue to red when viewed from different angles.

3. The irregular shapes of the see-through register printed on the front and the back are combined to form the denomination numeral “50” when the note is held up to the light.

4. Aside from the raised print of letters and denomination numerals, two tactile marks in the shape of flowers in dark blue, representing the Braille number

5. Can be identified by touch.

The Series 16 is designed to glorify Thai kings of different periods. The existing as well as the previous series still remain legal tender.

Wang baru Malaysia problem

Today, there is a little bit heat discussion about "Wang baru Malaysia problem" (Problem with Malaysia New Commemorative banknotes) in Bank Negara Malaysia official Facebook. In my earlier post; Exchange faulty new commemorative notes, BNM said that we can change the commemorative sets if they're faulty (Faulty mean the notes got fold, torn, wrong serial numbers etc). As long as the mistake is not hand made by collector. I don't want to talk about the discussion, you can read it yourself in BNM Official Facebook. BNM Admin in that discussion agree to give a collector chance to change his premier set with inspection by BNM staff to make sure the fold is not mistakenly made by human.

Ironically, one hour later, my sifu from Penang called me asking about the new commemorative banknote price in Kuala Lumpur. Normally, he don't called me, I am the one who always called him asking his opinion. He told me, he bought 30 sets of the premier and from that 30 sets, only 2 pieces of the commemorative sets don't have faulty banknotes. He also having the same problem as mine, most of the RM10 and RM20 have press mark like what you can see in the picture above. Lucky for him, he can sell all the other 28 pieces to his family and friends. Some of the notes a torn a little bit, he said the torn only can be seen if you take out the notes from its packaging. Most probably the notes get the torn when they put it in the packaging. These kind of defect will surely downgrade your collection grading and value. I talk with my sifu for about an hour about this matter, he advice me if you can find flawless banknote set, keep it. It might get a higher price in the future because many of the commemorative banknote do have some defect.

Canada 2012 Silver Loonie Coin

Royal Canadian Mint has just released a Canada 2012 Silver Loonie coin for the 25 years anniversary of the Loonie. The Silver-Plated 25th Anniversary of the Loonie Coin (1987-2012) is available in a Coin Card along with a plastic envelope and includes a “Build your own Loon” paper toy as well as a full color mini-book with illustrations telling the story of the Loonie. The Loonie name come from The Great Northern Diver (a bird), known in North America as the Common Loon (Gavia immer), is a large member of the loon, or diver, family of birds.

The obverse of the coin show the current portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt and in use since 2003. The reverse, shows the loon with the commemorative year depiction of “1987 – 2012” and the text “CANADA” above the design and “DOLLAR” below.

New coin circulate 16 January 2012

Many of my friends and families has been asking when will the new coins start circulate. Some were asking is it possible to have a new currency for Chinese New Year? Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has just released a press statement about this matter. The new Malaysia coin will start circulate 16 January 2012 onwards. Members of the public will be able to obtain these new coins through their normal business transactions. You don't need to rush to your nearest bank to change for the new coins.

The new coins to be introduced into circulation in phases are legal tender and will co-circulate with the existing series. The existing series will be gradually phased out. That's mean you can still use Parliament and bunga raya series coins. For collectors, any Parliament or Bunga Raya series coins will be keep in a special drawer. In ensuring a smooth transition to the new coins series, machine vendors had been given sufficient time to calibrate their machines to accept these new coins.

The new coins are smaller and lighter making it more user-friendly for the public. The yellow and silver coloured coins enable the public to easily distinguish the different denominations. The edged designs and the different sizes will facilitate the visually impaired to identify and differentiate the denominations. In addition, latest advancements in minting technology which incorporates improved counterfeit resistance security features are embodied in the new coins series. The new metal alloy used for minting has enhanced durability against wear and corrosion.

1793 chain cent sold 1.3M

A 1793 penny known as a "1793 chain cent" sold for a record $1,380,000 by Heritage Auction on 4 January 2012. The chain cent get its name from the interlocking chain with 15 links on its reverse. It were struck during late February and early March 1793 with only approximately 36,103 pieces minted. The coin was made at the Mint in Philadelphia in 1793, the first year that the U.S. made its own coins. Heritage officials said in a news release that the name of the buyer was not revealed but that he was "a major collector." One of the coin's earliest owners was a well-known Baltimore banker, Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.

During its time, people had been misinterpret the chain with slavery (similar iconography had been utilized on the reverse of the earlier Fugio Cent and Revolutionary War era Continental currency). The chain had been changed with a wreath cent, quickly prepared and approved. Originally, the reverse chain had been intended to symbolize the togetherness of the newly formed Union.

Obverse design

The obverse design consisted of a stylized Liberty head with flowing hair. The inscription "LIBERTY" appeared above the portrait, and the date below. The design was rather sparse and empty compared to those that would come later.

Reverse design

The reverse's central design figure, for which the coin is named, is an interlocking chain with 15 links, representing the 15 American states in existence at that time. Both the words "ONE CENT" and the fraction "1/100" appear within the chain. Along the outer edge is inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". On the first working die, the engraver failed to allow adequate room for the entire inscription, and it had to be abbreviated to "UNITED STATES OF AMERI.". These early dies were cut by hand, rather than being made from master hubs as is the practice today.

Exchange faulty new commemorative notes

Do you know you can exchange faulty new commemorative notes with a new one, as long as Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) have any stock available. I read in Facebook and some blogs that they're many faulty premier and RM20 notes. Most of the notes have the same faulty problem as mine in this pictures. In some cases the RM10 notes folded in the pack. One rare case, the serial number in one of the note (for premier pack) is different from the rest. This kind of faulty case will downgrade the value of the notes. This is the first time I saw many faulty notes in BNM commemorative. Hopefully they will replace it with a replacement notes and sell it to collector. That will surely make us happy.

How to exchange faulty commemorative banknotes? You need to contact your nearest BNM branches and ask them if any premier or single pack still available. You can exchange them as long as the faulty notes (fold genuinely made by BNM not made by collector etc) and packaging are genuine and in good condition. If they do have the new set, you need to rush and go to that BNM branch as fast as possible because it might be gone in an instant. Many collector and investor still looking for the new commemorative banknotes.

RMS Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world when she set off on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City on 10 April 1912. Asia City Flea Market

I am in Sabah recently and had a chance to visit Asia City Flea Market in Kota Kinabalu. Thanks to my Facebook friend Paul Simbaku who informed me about this flea market. The flea market located in Star City Mall, not so far from Center Point Shopping Mall (around 800m walk). The Flea Market open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at around 10am until 5pm. I were told that there are 7 sellers who are regular at this flea market right now but most of them will only be selling on weekend. I am visiting this flea market on Friday, 30 December 2011, only 3 people are selling at that time.

In this flea market, you can found Malaysia, British North Borneo, Sarawak, Malaya and many foreign coins and banknotes but in my visit that day, look like they don't have much item to display (when I visit Wisma Merdeka dealers that day, they too don't have much item on display). They are also selling Malaysia new banknote in this flea market and one seller selling stamps and 1st day cover. I don't had a chance to visit them on weekend, maybe another 4 sellers that I had not meet had many other item on sale.

The items price in this flea market slightly higher from any flea market I had been visiting before. I seen some Sarawak coins that I have been hunting since last 2 years but the price almost double from the market price. The high price stop me from bargaining for those coins. This is just my personal opinion, maybe any Sabahan collectors can enlighten me about this matter. Asia City Flea Market still a must visit for coin collectors who are visiting Kota Kinabalu.

Now you can explain football offside rule with just a coin. Royal Mint UK has released a London 2012 50p Sports Collection-Football coin. The coin is one of 29 coins to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Football 50p coin, designed by Neil Wolfson, London sport journalist. Neil Wolfson designed his coin in the hope that it would encapsulate football in a simple image. As the offside rule is a perennial talking point, the image is designed to provoke discussion, which was what he was aiming for. Neil is currently working as a production journalist.

The London 2012 Sports Collection comprises 29 50p coins representing the 29 sports of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. On 19 December 2011 the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) has introduce into circulation a gold commemorative coin ‘The Virgin Mary Wayshower’ from the ‘Bulgarian Iconography’ series. This is yet another coin from the series, which features an author’s replica of the double-sided icon ‘The Virgin Hodegetria’ (‘She who shows the Way)’, which since 1939 has been preserved at the National Church Museum in Sofia.The coin is intended to stir collectors’ interest and make an appropriate present for the forthcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays, which are associated with a new beginning and a hope for a good future.

The obverse of the coin features the logo of the Bulgarian National Bank and the year ‘1879’ inscribed on the ribbon. The inscription ‘БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА’ (Bulgarian National Bank), the nominal value of the coin ‘20 ЛЕВА’ (BGN 20), and the year of issue ‘2011’ go in circumference.

Taiwan 2012 commemorative dragon coin

Taiwan Central Bank announce on Tuesday it will issue a commemorative coin set for 2012, the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Dragon on 16 January 2012. The Central Bank has appointed the Bank of Taiwan to deal with the sale of 150,000 sets of coins, limited to one coin set per purchaser at a time. Each set consists of one silver coin weighing an ounce as well as two proof coins in different denominations. The silver coin has a face value of NT$100, and the two proof coins NT$50 and NT$20, respectively. Each coin set costs NT$2,000.

The obverse face of the silver coin shows the image of a dragon. Dragons can soar into the air and dive under the sea with equal ease. They are infinitely resourceful. Since ancient times, the Chinese people have regarded dragons as a symbol of unparalleled distinction and auspiciousness. The reverse side features an image of the “Ershawan Gun Emplacement”(二沙灣砲臺) located on the eastern side of Keelung Harbor, which was built on a natural reef and reconstructed in 1886 by General Liu Ming-Chuan, the first Taiwan Provincial Governor during the Ching Dynasty. It was classified by the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a national historic site.

Euro 10 years Commemorative €2 coin

Yesterday, European Central Bank has released a Euro 10 years Commemorative €2 coin design. The coin is being issued in all euro zone countries and bears the same design on one side. This is the third time that all euro-area countries will issue a euro coin with a common design on the national side. The first was the commemorative 2-euro coin issued to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome in 2007 and the second commemorated 10 years of Economic and Monetary union and the creation of the euro as book money, in 2009. Commemorative coins always have a value of 2 euro and are put into circulation in the whole euro area, and they are often the subject of keen interest from coin collectors.

The winning design symbolises the way in which the euro has become a true global player in the last ten years and its importance in ordinary people's lives (represented by the people in the design), trade (the ship), industry (the factory) and energy (wind power stations). The winning design was created by Mr Helmut Andexlinger who is a professional designer at the Austrian Mint.

Citizens of all countries of the euro-area were invited to submit designs via a dedicated website during a three-week period in May. A professional jury selected five from among the more than 800 designs submitted. These five were put to a public web vote among citizens and residents of the euro area between 6 and 24 June. Close to 35 000 participated in the vote. The winning design received 34 % of the votes.

How much Malaysia new banknote market price right now? Many non-collectors asking me the same question. Most of them are investor who want to get some profit from Malaysia new commemorative banknote especially from the premier set (a complete collection of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50 and RM100 with same serial number). Its a little bit hard to find premier set outside Kuala Lumpur since Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) don't have branches in some Malaysia states and they distribute a small quantity of the premier set in other states. If you want the premier set, the best way is to buy it from BNM KL or called your nearest BNM branch.

How much the price for the new commemorative banknote?
1. Premium set = RM380-RM400 (BNM sell price RM300) and goes up to RM450 outside Kuala Lumpur.
2. Set of 2 (RM1 and RM5) = RM20 (BNM sell price RM15) and goes up to RM25 outside Kuala Lumpur.
3. Set of 1 (RM20)= RM35 (BNM sell price RM30) and goes up to RM45 outside Kuala Lumpur.

With so much interest on the new banknotes, BNM has implemented a new rules:

Effective 3rd January 2012, all purchases of the new commemorative banknotes sets will require you to register your name in our system and present your MyKad/MyKid to us. For foreigners, you will have to present your passport. Once registered and cleared by the system, you may purchase the maximum quantity of the sets (i.e ONLY 1 set for premium and 5 sets EACH for the set of 2 and set of 1). Otherwise you will need to come in a week's time to make another purchase. This practice is standardised at all counters (HQ and branches). We hope everyone will follow this simple rule so that many people will have an equal chance to buy the sets. Thank you... and yes, ALL sets are still AVAILABLE for purchase.

Happy New Year 2012 to all my readers. In a few hours time, it will be the end of 2011 and a start of a new year 2012 in Malaysia. Everyone are happily wishing happy New Year in Facebook and Twitter. 2011 has been great to me with a lot of personal achievement. This blog has achieve 1 million view since September 2011. Again, thank you to all my readers. I will try to give more new information for 2012. The only problem for me is most of the times, they're no broadband connection in the areas that I go. I think many Malaysian also having the same problem, especially if you go to a lot of places in Malaysia.

Malaysia will be using new currency for 2012. New coins has been announced on July and new banknotes has been announced recently in December. Both the new currency come with commemorative collections for collector to collect. The premier set of 4th series Malaysia banknotes has been a very hot item in the market right now. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has been selling the premier set (A complete collection of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50 and RM100 with the same serial number) for RM300. The price for the premier set in local market has gone up to RM500 per set. Some seller in Sabah sell them for RM600. Many none collector has been asking me why we collector take the trouble to get the commemorative banknotes since it will be in circulation in 2012. Many friends and families that I meet are very interested with the new RM20 notes. Many of them don't know that RM20 notes has been used in Malaysia before.

What is your new year 2012 resolution? It will be a year of the dragon for 2012 in Chinese almanac. I think most collector will like to add a new coins or banknotes in their collection, like always. Again for 2012, I don't target for my collection but my personal life. I had been rarely doing a coin hunting around Malaysia for 2011 since almost all my dealers are rising their item price tremendously. In my opinion, the new Malaysia banknotes, "Distinctively Malaysia" are the most beautiful design for Malaysia banknotes. I hope Bank Negara Malaysia will try to submit an application to join IBNS banknote of the year. Everyone (especially collectors) in Malaysia has been waiting for the new banknotes since the announcement this year. Many Malaysian has been seen line up at all BNM branches to buy the commemorative banknotes since Thursday. You cannot buy them online since BNM don't have any online shop.

Malaysia 4th series banknotes

Malaysia 4th series banknotes has been launched by Malaysia Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak at Sasana Kijang on 28 December 2011. The commemorative banknotes are sold at all BNM branches and will only available for circulation in the second half of 2012. The latest series of Malaysian banknotes draws its inspiration from elements which distinctively define the country's diverse culture, heritage and nature. Themed 'Distinctively Malaysia', the fourth series of Malaysian banknotes features traditional expressions in the art and craft, natural wonders, flora and fauna, economy and tradition.

On the obverse side, all banknote denominations in the new series retain the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Tuanku Muhammad, the national flower Rosa-sinensis hibiscus (known locally as the 'Bunga Raya') and patterns of traditional woven fabric - the 'songket'.

RM100 banknote-Natural Wonders

The magnificent beauty of Malaysia's two prominent natural wonders, declared 'World Heritage Sites' by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are portrayed on the RM100 banknote.

These are the Kinabalu Park in Sabah, home to the majestic Mount Kinabalu (the highest mountain in Southeast Asia) and the spectacular limestone pinnacle rock formations of Gunung Api valley, found within the Mulu National Park in Sarawak. Together, they represent the many natural wonders of Malaysia that provides visitors a unique experience.

RM50 banknote-Agriculture and Technology

Oil palm and biotechnology are featured on the RM50 banknote as Malaysia's thriving economy icons. Oil palm has become the country's most valuable agricultural crop as Malaysia is one of the largest producer and exporter of palm oil in the world.

Biotechnology continues to drive this commodity up the value chain, supporting the nation's economic transformation towards higher value-added activities in the agriculture, manufacturing and services sectors of the economy. Crude palm oil is also used as the underlying commodity to facilitate Islamic financing.

RM20 banknote-Marine Life

As ambassadors of the rich and colourful marine life found in our tropical waters, two of the most well-known species of sea turtles endemic to Malaysian waters are on the new RM20 banknote - the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea).

The Hawksbill is easily identified by its curved beak and scaly shell while the Leatherback has a leathery skin and seven ridges on its shell. These gentle turtles are a reminder that their existence rests in the delicate balance of human activity and marine life conservation.

RM10 banknote-Flora

Malaysia's lush tropical jungle, which is one of the world's oldest living rainforest, is home to a spectacular variety of flowering plants. Most iconic amongst them is the Rafflesia, the world's largest flower.

The Rafflesia Azlanii species featured on the new RM10 banknote is indigenous to Peninsular Malaysia and was first discovered in the Royal Belum Forest Reserve of the state of Perak in 2003. To commemorate its discovery, this majestic flower was named after the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuff Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu-Lah.

RM5 polymer banknote-Widlife

Featured on the new RM5 polymer banknote is the Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros), one of the largest and most magnificent hornbill species in the world.

Found in low densities throughout various rainforests in the country, this beautiful, broad-winged and long-tailed forest bird plays an important role in the customs and traditional ceremonies in Sarawak which is known as 'Bumi Kenyalang' or 'Land of Hornbills'. Hornbill is also seen as a symbol of strength and courage by the native communities of Sarawak.

RM1 polymer banknote-Traditional Sport

Kite-flying is a popular traditional sport in Malaysia especially in Kelantan and Terengganu. Kite-flying is also traditionally a celebration of a good harvest which brings together the local communities in these states.

Amongst the best-known and most iconic Malaysian kites is the 'Wau Bulan' or Moon Kite which is featured on the new RM1. The Wau Bulan, which is hand crafted from bamboo and paper, is also a popular decorative item that adorns the walls of Malaysian homes.

Malaysia new banknotes for 2012 has been released by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) since yesterday. The new notes launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak at Sasana Kijang. The new currency series comprises newly designed banknotes and coins. The banknotes issued are in the denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100 and will be available for circulation in the second half of 2012. The RM50 denomination banknote for the new currency series is already in circulation. For this new series, polymer substrate is used to make the RM1 and RM5 banknotes.

The new series of banknotes incorporated enhanced security features in line with the latest advancements in banknote technology. The security features for the new banknotes include shadow image, clear window, watermark portrait with pixel and highlighted numerals, colour shifting security thread, micro lens thread, perfect see-through register, coloured glossy patch for public recognition. Other features include tactile identification which enables the visually impaired to identify and distinguish the different denominations.

Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing commemorative banknotes to mark the introduction of the new currency series. Three types of commemorative banknote collections will be offered for sale as follows:

A collection of two banknotes (RM1 and RM5 denomination) - 500,000 sets priced at RM15.00 each.
A collection of a single banknote (RM20 denomination) - 500,000 sets priced at RM30.00 each.
A collection of six banknotes (RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20, RM50 and RM100 denominations) - 50,000 sets priced at RM300.00 each. For each set of this collection, all the banknote denominations will carry the same serial number.

The commemorative banknotes are available for sale from 22 December 2011 at Bank Negara Malaysia's headquarters (BNMLINK) and its branches located in Pulau Pinang, Johor Bahru, Kuala Terengganu, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity Coin

Mint of Poland with National Bank of Poland has launched a 20 Years of The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity coins in 925 Silver and Nordic Gold. I like the heart shaped silver coins, an unusual coins design. The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (GOCC, Polish Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy, WOŚP) is one of the biggest, non-governmental, non-profit, charity organizations in Poland. When anyone gives GOCC volunteers any amount of money, they gets a red heart sticker in return.

On the reverse, the coin design includes a 20th years anniversary text with a tree and heart flowers. The reverse show a piano keyboard cascading up and down the left side of the coin along with the emblem of Poland, the eagle and the coin’s face value of 10 Zlotych.

Austria €5 Society of Friends of Music coins

Yesterday, The Austrian Mint has released their first coin of 2012, 2012 Austria €5 Issue The Society of Friends of Music in Vienna. The coin celebrates 200 years of the “Society of Music Friends, in Vienna”. The coin will be available in 2 metals and 2 versions. The 300,000 copper versions will be uncirculated coins that are only available through the Austrian banking system. The 50,000 special uncirculated versions will be available from the traditional outlets for Austrian commemorative coins. The silver coin is available in special uncirculated quality and will have a maximum mintage of 50,000. Each of these coins is vacuumed sealed in a colourful and informative blister pack, with a gold-colored sleeve and bilingual text in English and German.

The reverse design of the 5 euro coin, which is the same for both the copper and silver versions, features the Musikverein’s main concert hall, the Golden Hall and its impressive organ. The obverse designed by the Mint’s Chief engraver Thomas Pesendorfer (who is also the designer for the Vienna Philharmonic bullion coin issued since 1989) highlights the intricate details found in the Golden Hall. Most famous of these are the caryatids. These female draped figures seem to carry the weight of the magnificent building on their heads. In the upper background can be seen a portion of the complex faceted ceiling with frescoes. As well the mighty pipes of the famous organ are noted in the design. Mr. Pesendorfer has achieved great depth of field on this coin with his clever design that uses the corner of the Golden Hall, the ceiling, and the chandelier to allow one to feel like they are in the hall.

The obverse of the nine-sided coin is the standard 5 euro design, with the denomination encircled by the shields of the nine federal provinces of Austria. In the center is the face value of 5 euros. The obverse was designed by mint engraver Helmut Andexlinger.

The Musikverein celebrates its 200 anniversary in 2012. It started as a small group of friends of music and grew rapidly and soon had its own concert hall. Prior to building the performance hall it currently owns, they had a small hall that only seated 700 listeners. It was much too small to satisfy the demand from the public who wanted to enjoy great music on a regular basis. Today’s Musikverein concert hall was built and is owned by the Society of Music Friends on land given to them by the Emperor Franz Joseph. The opening day was January 6, 1870. The concert hall is considered by experts to be one of the finest in the world, which is truly amazing considering it was built at a time when the science of acoustics did not exist. The Golden Hall is world-renowned because it is from here that the annual New Year’s concert is broadcast. Some estimates state that more than a billion listeners tune in for this annual broadcast.

14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong coin?

Everyone already knew, yesterday, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah took his oath as the 14th Yang Dipertuan Agong at Istana Negara. One question that most probably in all Malaysian coin collectors mind, will Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) mint any commemorative coin for the new 14th YDP Agong coronation. The last two YDP Agong have their coins minted by Bank Negara. But this time, the oldest monarch in Malaysia History (84 years old) is making history as the first head of state to become King/YDPA twice. He previously served as the fifth Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 1970 to 1975.

I had been asking about it in BNM Facebook page but still with no reply from BNM Admin. In my opinion, BNM should mint two types of coins, fifth Yang di-Pertuan Agong and 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong coins. I know Kedah people love their King so much, BNM will have no problem to sell those coins. The only problem is if the King agree/give his approval to mint the coins. In my opinion as a coin collector, it will be a great piece of coin to collect since we can keep a coin with a young King face and a coin with current pictures of the King.

A little bit biography of Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah. He born on 28 November 1927. Tuanku Abdul Halim married twice: In 1956 to Tuanku Bahiyah, daughter of Tuanku Abdul Rahman of Negeri Sembilan by whom he has three daughters. In 1975 to Cik Haminah binti Hamidun, a commoner from Perak, who was titled Che Puan Kedah until 9 January 2004 when she was promoted to Sultanah of Kedah On 15 July 2008. On 15 July 2008, Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah celebrated his Golden Jubilee as the Sultan of Kedah. He is only the fourth Sultan in a line of 28 Sultans who have celebrated 50 years of reign in Kedah.

With so much history in the men himself, I think BNM should mint a new coin for 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. I will update if there is any news about any new coins for 14th YDPA. 1787 gold coin sold $7.4M

A rare 1787 gold coin sold $7.4M in an auction, highest prices ever paid for a gold coin. For a record, World's most expensive coin: 1794 silver dollar sold for $7.85 million. The rare 1787 gold Brasher doubloon purchased by a Wall Street investment firm. A New Orleans-based coin and precious metals company, Blanchard and Co., brokered the deal but identities of the buyer and seller were not disclosed. Minted by Ephraim Brasher, a goldsmith and neighbor of George Washington, the coin contains 26.66 grams of gold, slightly less than an ounce. The Brasher doubloon is considered the first American-made gold coin denominated in dollars; the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia didn't begin striking coins until the 1790s.

The 1787 Brasher Doubloon is an impressive example of early American design. The debate continues as to which side of the coin is the obverse, but most numismatists now agree that the landscape side of the coin is the obverse. The coin features the radiant sun just behind the peak of a mountain with the sea in front. Brasher’s name is boldly engraved below the sea. The landscape is framed by a circle of beads. Along the periphery of the coin, separated by rosettes, are the legends “NOVA EBORAC,” which is the Latin name for New York, “COLUMBIA” and the state motto “EXCELSIOR.” Translated literally, the legend means New York, America, Ever Upward. “Excelsior” remains the New York State motto to this day.

The reverse depicts a proud, heraldic eagle with its wings displayed. The eagle is facing right and its head is surrounded by thirteen five-pointed stars, symbolizing the thirteen original states. Across the eagle’s breast is a shield. In the right talon, representing peace, are olive branches, and in the left talon are the arrows of war. The entire eagle is encircled by a wreath. At the bottom edge of the coin is the date with rosettes placed on either side. At the top edge is the inscription “UNUM E PLURIBUS” (One From Many) which is separated by two six-pointed stars.

The coin is called a Doubloon because it is approximately equal in weight to the Spanish Doubloon which circulated actively in colonial America. A value of $16 was initially attributed to the coin, but later research shows that this value was erroneously placed and the “Doubloon” was actually worth $15 at the time of issue. This value was first suggested in a comprehensive article about Brasher Doubloons written by numismatist William Swoger and published in the June 1, 1992 issue of Coin World magazine. Additional information about weights and measures of the era was published in the 1993 book, "Money of the American Colonies and Confederation," by Phil Mossman.

Investor or Collector

Are you an investor or a collector? Have you asked that question to yourself recently? Why do I ask this kind of question today? Last Friday, I had been posting about Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) online shop petition (you can read it here: BNM online shop-petition) and many of my friends reply and join the petition. For some who don't like the idea, they asking me why do they need to sacrifice for other collectors who don't know how to get their collection at BNM? They said online shop will only killed our hobby and the price of BNM commemorative coins will be drop drastically because everyone can get new coin easily. Selfish? For me, everyone have their own opinion, you have the right to say anything you want.

Do you collect coins and banknotes as an investor? If you buy coins collection and think about gain any profit in the future, that mean you're an investor. You buy to gain profit not because the beauty of the coins. Most investor will buy and put their collection in a safe place. Nowadays, I saw many investor coming into this hobbies. Most of them don't have any knowledge of their collections. When I ask them why they join this hobby. Most of their answer were their friends said it is rewarding then buying gold. Are coin and banknote collecting more rewarding then buying gold? In my opinion, the answer is yes, if you have the knowledge and patient. If you can predict which coins will get highest profit potential.

Do you think you're a collector? Collector collect coins because in their eyes the coin design is beautiful and they want to keep it in their collection. Collector don't think about profit, they just want to collect. A collector will love to hold and look at his/her coins collection. Collectors always want a complete collection of anything that they like. They learn the history of the old coins and banknotes that they have in their possession. If they don't have enough money to buy any collection, a chance to hold their dream coins or banknotes, the way it feels to hold them, already satisfy a collector.

Some of us can have both attitude. Many collector keep their collections for profit but most of the time, the profit goes to a new coin. I cannot tell you whatever attitude that you must choose. I don't force anyone to join my online petition. In my opinion, BNM online shop is just an options if we want to buy any BNM new commemorative coins. Its just a place for us collector to share our opinion. If you think an online shop can help you get your collection, sign the petition. If you think it will only lower the profit gain from new BNM coin, you have your right not to sign. The choice is yours, I am only giving you opportunity to voice out your opinion.

Rare Greek Coin to be Auctioned

A rare Greek Coin to be Auctioned by Classical Numismatic Group (CNG) in New York on January 4 next year, The Dekadrachm of Akragas. The coin was minted in Sicily and dates to 409-406 B.C. The Greek coin, one of only 12 examples known to exist and only the third to come to market in a generation. The 2400-year-old coin is ecpected to fetch $2.5 million in the online auction by CNG. Six versions of the coin are in museum collections.The obverse of the silver coin is stamped with the image of a Quadriga, or four horse chariot. The reverse of the coin show two eagles clutching a dead hare. The coin measures about 35.5 mm (1.4 inches) and weighs 43.4 grams (1.5 oz). The Classical Numismatic Group, is an international firm that deals in ancient, medieval and British coins. In its online catalogue CNG described the coin as "a masterpiece of late 5th century Greek art" and "one of the most beautiful of all Greek coins."

BSP will release Jose Rizal coin

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will release a Jose Rizal commemorate coin this December to commemorate 150th years of The Philippine national heroes which the country celebrated last June 19, 2011. The face of the coin will feature the portrait of the hero and the markings, “150 years,” “Republika ng Pilipinas” and “1861-2011.” Etched on the reverse side are the new BSP seal, “1-piso” and “2011.” BSP will produce 10 million pieces of the round, grayish, nickel-plated steel coin which has the same size (24-millimeters in diameter) and weight (5.35 grams) as the one-piso coin currently in circulation. The Office of the President and BSP’s Monetary Board have both approved the issuance of the coin. He also has been feature in 2 dalawang piso banknote before.

José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896), was a Filipino polymath, nationalist and the most prominent advocate for reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. He is considered the Philippines' national hero and the anniversary of Rizal's death is commemorated as a Philippine holiday called Rizal Day. Rizal's 1896 military trial and execution made him a martyr of the Philippine Revolution. As a political figure, Rizal was the founder of La Liga Filipina, a civic organization that subsequently gave birth to the Katipunan led by Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo. He was a proponent of institutional reforms by peaceful means rather than by violent revolution. The general consensus among Rizal scholars, however, attributed his martyred death as the catalyst that precipitated the Philippine Revolution. Rizal was executed at Bagumbayan, now Luneta, on 30 December 1896 which ushered in the Philippine Revolution against Spain.

Official London 2012 Olympic coins

Early last month, Royal Mint has revealed. The official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic coins. The coins are winning designs from Royal Mint competition for art and design students attending higher education colleges and universities across the UK. Two British students had won the competition; Olympic coin by Saiman Miah, Paralympic coin by Pippa Sanderson. Both of them get £5,000 prize money each and a chance for their design to be a mementos of London 2012. The coins are UK legal tender.

The designer of the official Olympic coin, 24-year-old architectural student Saiman Miah (left), from Birmingham is currently studying for his Masters degree at the Birmingham School of Architecture. The designer of the official Paralympic coin, mature graphic and media design graduate Pippa Sanderson from Malvern, Worcestershire (right) recently graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Graphic and Media Design at Hereford College of Arts. Both coin design has a London 2012 Olympic emblem, which has a Union flag infill in full colour, is exclusive to the Official Olympic and Paralympic precious metal Proof coins.

New £2 Charles Dickens coin

Royal Mint has unveiled £2 Charles Dickens coin to marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens. The obverse of the coin features the familiar portrait of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS and the reverse feature the beardy face of legendary English writer design by Matthew Dent. The portrait made up from the titles of Dickens’ famous works. On the edge of the coin is an inscription of the quotation 'Something Will Turn Up', spoken by Wilkins Micawber in David Copperfield - said to have been Dickens's own favourite story.

Charles Dickens

Singapore Dragon Gold Coin 2012

Early November, The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) launched the 2012 Year of the Dragon Almanac Coins, Singapore Dragon Gold Coin. The coins will be issued on 1 January 2012. The dragon coins are part of the third Chinese Almanac Coins Series. One of the highlight of the coin release are 1 kg 999 fine Silver Proof-like coins with face value of $80, the largest uncirculated coin to be issued by MAS and $1 Gold Brilliant Uncirculated Coin, the smallest 999.9 gold coin ever issued by MAS. The Almanac coins will be sold by the Singapore Mint.

On the Reverse, the image of the dragon is integrated with ancient Chinese seal characters in a design that combines tradition with modernity. The animal is symbolized by the Chinese characters of the “Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches” to enhance the characteristics of the animal and the oriental flavour. The design incorporates a peony which symbolises blessings and festive cheer. The obverse of the coin bears the Singapore Arms with the year 2012.

Limit to bring cash in Malaysia

Any travellers entering or leaving Malaysia with cash and/or negotiable bearer instruments (e.g. traveller's cheques, bearer cheques) exceeding an amount equivalent to USD10,000 must make a declaration in form Customs No. 22. The form will be available at all Malaysia Customs Department Checkpoints at all entry and exit points of Malaysia for free. The rules start since 1 January 2010, in line with the global effort to combat money laundering and terrorism financing. Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Br i tain and Canada have adopted the same rule.

This is a requirement under section 23 of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001 (AMLATFA) and is in line with the Special Recommendation IX by the Financial Action Task Force which requires countries to have measures in place to detect the physical cross border transportation of cash and negotiable bearer instruments. Travellers could be fined up to RM1 million and/or face imprisonment not exceeding a term of one year if they fail to declare or make a false declaration. BNM new coin sale controversy

Everytime there is a new coin on sale by BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia), Collectors will always not satisfied by BNM system. I think this year around, BNM had been making few changes that is good for a start. They has been trying to inform collector early by announcing the date of WWF issue but many collector called BNM and asked if they can go to the event. BNM had pull back the announcement from their website and this give a lot of confusion to many collector. Many were saying that the new WWF coin release has been cancelled. Some were saying that BNM don't announce it early. Sound like, any BNM new coin sale will end up in controversy for collector.

For these commemorative issue, I am unlucky since the day BNM released the new WWF coins. On the first day of the coin sell, I cannot go to BNM because of work and my friends cannot buy for me since BNM has limit the coin buying for collectors (Only one unit for any; set of 3, set of 2, single gold, single silver), they also want to buy that coin for their collections. On 28 November, I go to Sasana Kijang and try to buy at least 5 pieces 1 ringgit WWF coin. Unlucky me, I only get to buy 1 piece of coin but a guy before me can buy 10 pieces? Its still 10:20 am in the morning. The BNM sales girls told me that the coin is out of stock. Out of stock but she can give 10 pieces of coins to a regular buyer? On 30 November, I try my luck again and go to BNM headquarters, again I only manage to buy 1 piece of the 1 ringgit WWF coin and no stock for other types of WWF coin anymore.

Do any of you remember, last time BNM are using Pos Malaysia Branches as a place to buy the commemorative coins? I don't know why they stop using Pos Malaysia but that system help many collector in a states without any BNM branch. Why don't BNM start doing an online shop for their commemorative coins? It will help working people to buy BNM coin online without taking any leave. At this moment, we need to go as early as 7.30 am to BNM to queue or we will most probably don't get to buy silver or gold coins. If they afraid that the gold and silver don't have a buyer, BNM can choose to mintage the coins according to order. Nowadays, many world mint do that but with limited mintage.

I think it is time for BNM to increase the mintage of their commemorative coins too especially gold and silver coins. Collector need to compete with dealers and people who like to invest in gold/ silver too. If BNM afraid that coin will get no buyer in the end. Why don't they make a poll before the release of the coins? BNM should start to make an early press release for any issuance of commemorative coins complete with pictures, technical details and the coin price. These will help collector to decide if they want to buy that coin or not. I know some BNM staff are trying hard to satisfy collector like me but bound by red tape with their superior. This time around, I heard less people complaint about not getting the gold coins like the Commemorative Bunga Raya Gold coins issue, congratulations to BNM.

Hope BNM will take this into consideration. To other collectors, please share what you think in here. I know many of you have something to say about this matter.

Longest coin line

Yesterday, I read a news by Philstar.com about an attempt by Philippine civic groups and charities to break Guinness World Record Longest coin line. The event was called, “Barya ng mga Bayani [Coins of Heroes]: The Power of Small Change.” Today, they reportedly have break the record with 73.02 kilometers of 25-centavo coins, breaking the Guinness World Record on the longest line of coins. Thousands of students and members of civic groups converged yesterday at the Quirino Grandstand at Rizal Park in Manila to join the event.

The old record hold by 64.88 kilometres of pennies set in Fort Scott, Kansas in 2008. The Americans used 3 million pennies or 1 pennies for that record. Its a new record for the longest line of single-denomination coins. The previous world record of 55.63 kilometers was set in Malaysia in 1995.

The Kabayanihan Foundation, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, and the City of Manila organized the daylong activity that started at about 9 a.m. at the park’s parade grounds that could accommodate a 100-kilometer line of coins. Kabayanihan spokesman Gerry Gomez said the target is to complete a coin line ranging from 75 to 100 kilometers in the early evening and representatives of Guinness World Records would document the event. Businesses, universities and private groups all contributed nearly 3.6 million 25-centavo denomination coins, amounting to about 912,000 pesos.

The second objective of the event was to start raising funds to help build classrooms for public elementary schools. All the coins gathered from the event served as donations for classroom building. BNM don't buy Dinar Iraq

I am a fan of BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia/Malaysia Central Bank) official Facebook page since I found them. I check their page at least once a day to check any information that is related to numismatic. Almost every week, people came to their pages and asked if BNM would buy Iraq Dinar or when the Dinar will RV. The same questions keep on coming even though BNM Pages Admin has been replying to the same questions. Some of the FB pages readers also misinterpret what BNM actually were saying in that pages. Here, I compile some of BNM reply about IQD in their official Facebook page.

Question:

If the Iraq Dinar RV, can I change Dinar Currency at the Central Bank (BNM)? How about fees that will be charge by BNM?

BNM Answer:

Question 1 - Answer: not possible. Bank did not conduct activities/services of foreign money-changing. Question 2 - Answer: See answer question 1.

Question:

I want to ask BNM about the phenomenon of Iraq dinar trading in Malaysia, can you clarify some thing regarding this matter. Is it legal to keep foreign currency at a high rate and is there any law regarding foreign currency control?

BNM Answer:

We'd like to share information with you that under the Exchange Control Act 1953, is an offense for a person in Malaysia to buy or sell foreign currency (forex) or do any act which involves, in relation to, or preparation for, purchase or sell foreign currency with any person, other than a registered dealer. Under this Act, is an offense for a person to aid or abet another person to purchase or sell foreign currency with any person, unless the person is an authorized dealer.

The Mall is a shopping mall beside PWTC (Putra World Trade Center). I had been receiving information about this flea market for almost a year. The last time I go check this Flea market, I don't find anyone selling coins or banknotes. After a failed coin hunting trip today at Sasana Kijang, I go for lunch in the Mall. On the way back to car park, I found Mr Ng from Summit USJ Flea Market. he don't remember me but his printed Malaysia Banknote sheet will make me remember him forever.

Mr. Ng told me, it has been a year since he change his location to The Mall. Last time the flea market only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They start to open everyday since the last 2 months. The Flea market start a bit late, around 11 am and they're only around 3 sellers who sale coin and banknote. Most of the Sellers in here sell cloth and women accessories. If you had been to Amcorp Mall Flea Market, don't put your expectation too high on this one. I maybe come in there a bit early, most of the sellers still arranging their item for display.

Its not that hard to find the mall Kuala Lumpur, If you're driving, try find Jalan Sultan Ismail signboard and head to PWTC, the mall is beside PWTC. If you're using Star LRT, you can stop at stesen LRT PWTC station. If you're using KTM Komuter, you need to stop at Putra KTM Komuter station. Most people will be heading to The Mall, you can follow them or ask anyone for direction. Its just around 150 meters walk from both the stations to the Mall. The flea market is on the lower ground (LG) level.

Beside Uncle NG, there is another uncle who also selling coins and banknotes. He a little bit shy and I only get to take his picture once. He told me he once open a shop at Jalan Maharajalela. I seen him before some where but don't remember where. His collection is a little bit more then what Uncle Ng have but most of them is in circulated condition. If you're looking for Malaysia Parliament coin series to complete your collection, you can try find him. I am not sure if he got any good collection for sale since he is busy and I don't want to disturb him. Just look at some of the collection he have for sale.

For everyone who has been asking when the next Malaysia Numismatic Society Auction (MNS) at Muzium Negara will be held, it will be held on 18 December 2011. It will be MNS Auction Number 150 and the last auction for this year. The Auction normally will be held at Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Muzium Negara, Jalan Petalawati, 50480 Kuala Lumpur. There is a small hall in there where this auction normally held by MNS. The auction normally start at 10.00am and viewing of the lots will start at 9.30am on the same day. As always, I advise you to come early around 8.30am since they're bourse table open for public to buy coins and banknotes.

There will be Bourse Tables available at RM 50.00 per table.Members interested,please book your tables with payments to Mr Tan Tai Seng (03-79835011) at least one week before the auction.

Malaysia fake notes

A readers asked me, how to do fake malaysia ringgit? If any of you remember, in 2008 there is a news about many Malaysia Bank in Gombak make a police report about a guy who printed fake money put them in Bank cash deposit machine and withdraw it from the same bank ATM. With just cheap printer, scanner, and special liquid, he has been converting fake money with original for few months. Most Malaysian counterfeiters used a high image resolution of the RM50/RM100 notes. If you look in the net, many of these high resolutions notes pictures has been taken down. One of the webmaster has put that Bank Negara Malaysia has email him to remove Malaysia ringgit high resolution pictures from his website.

Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the local criminal has been arrested at his rented house in Desa Jaya. As a result of inspection, the police then managed to find the suspect used a secret lab to print false money in large quantities.
"Most of the computers, scanners and printers be identified used to print banknotes for Malaysia, especially involving RM50 notes.
"The inspection also found the white paper used to produce counterfeit banknotes concerned. In addition, police also found a number of fake money estimated at more than RM14, 800, "he said.
Abdul Rahim said initial investigations revealed that the suspects would use the tactic soak RM50 ringgit real money in a special liquid before the paper has fallen into two front and rear attachments.
"He then would use the separated pure paper money to be affixed on the back or front surface ready to print fake money.
"Money is ready to put false is then dried using a hairdryer, while also using a special rolling mills," he said.
He said the fake money that has two genuine and counterfeit surface is then inserted in the machine failed to detect fraudulent deposit is one of the surface is genuine.
"Once the deposit is received the machine, the suspect will then immediately make a withdrawal via ATM machines nearby. Fraud incidents caused panic to several banks.
"No less than 15 police reports made by the bank fraud involving cunning," he said.

If you want to asked what liquid he is using to do the counterfeit notes, sorry, I will not tell anyone but that same liquid has been used to make "fake error notes". It will only work on the old RM50 notes not the new RM50 merdeka notes.

I had been sharing many news and story about counterfeit ringgit to help people understand how counterfeiters work but many readers still keep on deceived by these counterfeiters. Here are some of the news that I found for Malaysia fake notes:

They're few level of counterfeit money detection; Consumer, Banks and Authority/BNM. In consumer case, you need to feel, look and tilt the banknotes to check if they're original. The easiest one is the banknote watermark and Silver security thread. Please Do remember, circulating or using a counterfeits money as a real money is an offence under Malaysia Penal code. Under section 489 (b) Using as genuine forged or counterfeiting currency or banknotes, you can get Imprisonment for 20 years and fine. Under section 489 (c) Possession of forged or counterfeiting currency notes or banknotes, you can get Imprisonment for 10 years and fine.

Malaysia 50 years WWF Coins

Today, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is launching Malaysia 50 years WWF Coins. The new coins were launched by DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah, Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan at Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. BNM produce three types of commemorative coins to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The coins are legal tender in Malaysia.

On the coin obverse, the circumference of the coin depicts images of the nation's endangered animal species such as the tiger, rhinoceros, tapir, elephant and turtle. The centre of the coin features the image of the forests which is important for the survival of the wildlife. This also represents WWF's efforts in protecting the environment, the preservation of the endangered wildlife and the conservation of the forest habitat in Malaysia. The words "50th Anniversary" is to commemorate 50 years of WWF's efforts in addressing the environmental issues, while the years "1961-2011" signifies the period the WWF's establishment.

On the coin reverse, the centre of the coin depicts both the registered trademark and logo of the organisation which are "WWF" and the Panda. The words "Bank Negara Malaysia" which is the issuing authority of the commemorative coin appears on the top circumference of the coin. The denomination of the coin appears on the lower circumference. The image and silhouette of the Azlanii Rafflesia flower which is unique to Malaysia is featured on the left side of the coin.

London 2012 Kilo Gold Coins

Royal Mint UK, in partnership with the Royal Academy, recently announced a launch of two magnificent UK kilo coins, London 2012 Kilo Gold and Silver Coins. The first ever UK Gold Kilo coin, designed by one of the most influential sculptors of modern times, Sir Anthony Caro. Sir Anthony is a member of the Royal Academy and one of Britain’s most prolific and respected sculptors, is known as a modernist pioneer, having studied under both Sir Charles Wheeler and Sir Henry Moore. Both the coins design approved by the Queen and will be legal tender in Britain.

The coin itself is a mark for UK Legislation changes, before this, in the 40-year-old 1971 Coinage Act, there is a clause which limited the weight of UK coins. The first kilo coins of the realm, is the culmination of a journey which saw the introduction of this new primary legislation, itself further evidence that at the highest levels the UK not only supports the aspirations of London 2012, but is prepared to make legislative history in the process.

Recently, the Austrian Mint has issued a 100 Euro The Crown of St. Wenceslas Commemorative Gold Coin. The 16 grams gold coin struck in .986 fine gold with only 30,000 pieces mintage. The obverse of the gold coin portrays the Crown of St. Wenceslas The reverse shows a portrai t of Emperor Rudolf II. To his right a well-known view of Prague is depicted, with the Charles Bridge in the foreground and part s of the old town in the background. Prague castle (Hradschin) a nd St. Vitus's Cathedral, where the crown is kept today. The coin designed by Austrian Mint engraver, Herbert Waehner.

On May 3, 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) unveiled a 1million Gold Maple Leaf coin by artist Stanley Witten, with a face value of $1 million Canadian dollar. The weight of the coin is 100 kilograms, and measures 50 cm in diameter by 3 cm thick. The coin is mainly a promotional product to give the RCM a higher international profile. The 100-kilogram coin was conceived as a showpiece to promote the RCM's new line of 99.999 percent pure, one-ounce gold maple leaf bullion coins. WWF Coin released on 24 November

This is just a short announcement to all Malaysia coin collector, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will released a new WWF commemorative coin on 24 November 2011. The event will be held at Sasana Kijang on the same day. I am still waiting for the details of the coins that will be released. If any of you knew what kind of coins (Silver, Gold coins) or their specifications that will be released by BNM, please share with us here. I will keep on updating this post if I have any new information regarding this coins. Thank you to BNM for an early announcement but a details information of the coin will be better.

New Canada 100 bill on Monday

Bank of Canada today announce that they will begin circulating the new $100 bill (Canada’s first polymer bank note) on Monday, 14 November 2011. They had been circulating information regarding the new banknotes security features since middle of this year. New Canada $100 polymers, which celebrates Canada’s contributions to innovation in the field of medicine, will be featured at an official event taking place in Toronto, Ontario, at the MaRS Centre, a hub for public-private sector innovation and collaboration between the business and scientific communities. Speaking at the event will be Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of Canada, and Dr. Ilse Treurnicht, Chief Executive Officer of MaRS Discovery District.

The New Canada $100 polymers, features images that focus on Canadian innovations in the field of medicine: from pioneering the discovery of insulin to treat diabetes, to the invention of the pacemaker and to the role Canadian researchers have played in mapping the human genetic code. Sir Robert Borden, Prime Minister of Canada between 1911 and 1920, in an updated portrait, remains on the front of the note. You can read more about it via this link; Canada new 100 dollars.

The Canada $100 notes contain a number of unique features that expand the frontiers of bank note security and will make them difficult to counterfeit but easy to check. Most prominent are two transparent areas: the larger area extends from the top to the bottom of the note and contains complex holographic features; the other is in the shape of a maple leaf. Bank Negara Museum

To all my readers who have been looking for information about Bank Negara Malaysia Money Museum, its already open and located in a new BNM building called Sasana Kijang. The new Bank Negara Museum or Galeri Numismatic is located on the second floor of the visitor building. The building has been open since 15 September this year. I know many of you searching for information about the new museum and end up with an old BNM money museum yellow teaser. Maybe they don't have time to update their website or they don't realize that many people looking for information end up with that 2 years old teaser. The Sasana Kijang building house International Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB), an international organisation for the setting of prudential standards for the Islamic Finance and its global development, The SEACEN Centre, a regional learning and research Centre for Central Banks in Asia. In addition to training facilities, offices and conference halls, Sasana Kijang also houses the Bank Negara Malaysia Knowledge Management Centre and the Bank Negara Malaysia's Museum and Art Gallery which is open to the public. The total built-up area of Sasana Kijang is 1.09 million sq.ft.

In Galeri Numismatik, they display their collections according to the earliest coinage in Malaysia history. You get to see the vast collection of early Malay coinage from Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perak, Melaka and also Sabah (British North Borneo) & Sarawak coins. Most of their Malay Sultanate collection are something that I never seen before in my life. In the gallery, you also get to see almost complete set of Malaysia commemorative coins collection since 1967 and the latest, all the coins are display on a wall.

Queen Elizabeth II coin portraits

Last week, a few of my Facebook friends have a discussion about Queen Elizabeth II coin potraits. One of them is asking about a potrait that look identical but with a different writing on them. One of them have a writing "ELIZABETH II D.G.REG F.D" and the other "ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F D". My friend were thinking that both of the portraits on the coins are different persons because of the different faces and writing on the coin obverse. Most of the answer on the discussion told him that both coins show the pictures of Queen Elizabeth II but with a different portraits design. The words abbreviations "D. G. REG. F. D." or "DEI GRATIA REGINA F D" stand for Dei gratia regina fidei defensor which means ""By the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith" and normally can be seen on British coins.

Here are some of the Queen Elizabeth II coin portraits designs:

Mary Gillick Portrait

First portrait of the Queen to appear on a coin was issued in 1953, shows The Queen wearing a wreath, a young woman in her mid-20s. This portrait was used both on UK coinage and the coinage of many commonwealth countries. The first portrait was used from 1953 to 1965 on all pre-decimal coins.

Cecil Thomas Portrait

A portraits on Malaya and British Borneo coins is a design by Cecil Thomas. His designs showed an effigy of The Queen crowned and facing right. Cecil Thomas designed a ‘realm portrait’ which is similar in nature and appears in the same context as that of George VI who was king before and father to Queen Elizabeth II. The design approved for use on colonial coinage and certain medals.

Arnold Machin RA Portrait

A new portrait of the Queen was adopted for the decimal coins. Designed by Arnold Machin RA, it had in fact been approved by the Queen as early as June 1964. Like Mary Gillick, Machin avoided the couped portrait cut off by the neck which had been usual on coins earlier in the century. The wreath, however, was replaced with the tiara which the Queen had been given as a wedding present from her grandmother Queen Mary. The design was used for the decimal coins from 1968 to 1984.

Raphael Maklouf Portrait

From 1985 to 1997, UK circulating coins were struck bearing a royal portrait by the sculptor Raphael Maklouf. The couped portrait – cut off at the neck – shows the Queen with the royal diadem which she wears on her way to and from the State Opening of Parliament, and includes a necklace and earrings. A close examination reveals the artist’s initials, RDM, on the truncation of the neck, the inclusion of the middle letter – for David – ensuring that the signature would not be misinterpreted as a reference to the Royal Mint.

Dora de Pedery-Hunt Portrait

Dora de Pedery-Hunt was an artist who designed various coins and medals. She created the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II that was used on Canadian coinage in 1990. She was the first Canadian citizen to design an effigy for Her Majesty, The Queen. Her effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, when she was 64 years old.

Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS Portrait

Portrait design by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS is a winning design in a competition held by the Royal Mint to design the obverse of the 1997 Golden Wedding crown. The design introduced in 1998 and show the matureness of the Queen’s years, etchings of age to reflect her 71 years.

Susanna Blunt Portrait

Susanna Blunt is a Canadian portrait artist who designed the most recent portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the current Canadian coinage, which began in 2003. Blunt was invited by the Canadian Mint to join eight other artists in a nationwide competition for a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to be used on Canadian coins. Blunt created the image from a photograph of the Queen.

Securency case in Malaysia

In a recent statement by The Malay Mail, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner Datuk Shukri Abdull indicated that there would be no fresh charges related to Securency case. MACC have completed their investigations and have charged the former senior central bank officer and a businessmen. In a report by Australian newspaper The Age yesterday, lawyers forNote Printing Australia (NPA) and Securency entered guilty pleas at the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court to three charges each of bribing or conspiring to bribe foreign officials to obtain a business advantage.

I had been following Securency case in Malaysia since June 2010. Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) fully owns banknote printer Note Printing Australia (NPA) and half of Securency, which manufactures plastic banknotes. These companies printed the RM5 polymer note, as well as the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games RM50 commemorative notes. Here are some of the story that had been posted in my blog.

Sex bribe for currency printing contracts

Australia The Age Newspaper reported, Bank Negara Malaysia official probably involve in sex bribe for currency printing contracts. The allegations were made on ABC television by a key witness in a long-running Federal Police investigation into the international operations of Securency, which provides the polymer base for high security paper currency. Responding a query by Starbiz in relation to Bernama report on the investigation in Britain, Indonesia and Malaysia for alleged bribery by the currency-printing subsidiaries of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). 3 arrested in Malaysia for Securency case

Malaysian's anti-corruption agency said it has arrested three individuals over an Australian banknote supply contract scandal, as an international probe into the case deepened. Malaysia's Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said the trio were arrested last month after claims emerged that the Melbourne-based Securency International offered bribes to officials in Malaysia. They were arrested in Putrajaya when they went there to give their statements. Read More.

Securency hired Malaysia political family

A news by Sydney Morning Herald reported that Securency hired Malaysia political family. The Age has learned that Securency signed Kuala Lumpur firm Liberal Technology as its Malaysian agent in 2009. The biggest individual shareholder in Liberal Technology is businessman Haris Onn Hussein. Haris Onn Hussein is well connected; his cousin is the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, and his brother is Home Affairs Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein. Read More.

Minister brother denies Liberal Technology shares

Businessman Haris Onn Hussein, brother of Malaysia's Home Affairs Minister yesterday said he was not a shareholder of Kuala Lumpur company when it was hired two years ago by Securency. He said he already sold his shares in Liberal Technology in September 2006 and had no dealings with Securency, which engaged the Malaysian firm as its agent in 2009. However, Liberal Technology's official records with Companies Commission of Malaysia had, until yesterday, listed Haris Onn Hussein as owning 180,000 shares. Read More.

RM5 polymer case involved ex BNM governor

A former Bank Negara Malaysia assistant governor Datuk Mohamad Daud Dol Moin, 58, has claimed trial at a Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, for accepting RM100,000 bribe, to secure a contract for printing a RM5 polymer notes by Note Printing Australia Ltd. On the same day, businessman Abdul Kayum, has claimed trial at the Sessions Court in Shah Alam for bribing Mohamad Daud. The offences were allegedly committed at the EON Bank, Jalan Taipan in Subang Jaya on Nov 24, 2004 and Feb 15, 2005. Abdul Kayum was arrested on July 5 last year. Read More.

Securency tried to bribe Pak Lah

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s banknote firms, Securency and Note Printing Australia (NPA) are suspected of attempting to bribe Malaysia former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in order to get his help to win a $31 million currency contract for Malaysia RM5 polymer notes. The contracts negotiation occurred around 2003, the year he became prime minister and finance minister. Tun Abdullah served as Malaysia prime minister until 2009. Read More.

The middlemen, Abdul Kayum Syed Ahmad also involved in a 2004 case of black market link on supplying a nuclear weapon to Pakistan. Securency and NPA engaged Abdul Kayum in the late 1990s to lobby Malaysian government and banking officials to adopt the Australian-made polymer banknotes. Abdul Kayum's former business associates had told The Age that the man claimed to have high-level political connections in Malaysia that he could use to help strike deals for foreign companies. The Age disclosed that Abdul Kayum's Kuala Lumpur investment company Aksavest is alleged to have received hundreds of thousands of dollars in commissions from Securency and NPA. By late 2007, the Reserve Bank had ordered NPA to sever ties with Abdul Kayum and its other overseas middlemen due to integrity concerns.

Abdul Kayum is charged under Section 11(b) of the Anti Corruption Act 1997 with paying RM 50,000 through a middleman to Mohamad Daud to aid in obtaining a contract linked to the application for a project for printing of the RM5 polymer bank note by Note Australia Limited. He was also charged with a second offence under Section 11(b) of the Anti Corruption Act for paying Mohamad Daud another RM50,000 through the same middleman at the same place on Feb 15, 2005.

World 1st 1 tonne gold coin

Yesterday, Perth Mint announce World 1st, 1 tonne gold coin, 1 tonne Gold Kangaroo coin. The coin measures nearly 80cms wide and more than 12cms deep, weighing a massive 1000 kilograms of 99.99% pure gold, make it the new largest gold coin in the world. Previous holder of the largest gold coin released by Royal Canadian Mint in May 2007, 1 million dollar gold maple leaf coin, only weight at 100 kilos and measures 50 cm in diameter by 3 cm thick. The first 1 tonne gold coin by Perth Mint is certainly the most valuable gold bullion coin in the world with a market price of gold right now, it has a USD$55 million price tag on it.

The coin reverse shows a bounding red kangaroo surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight and bordered by the inscription AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO 1 TONNE 9999 GOLD and the year-date 2012.

The coin obverse of the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the monetary denomination of 1 MILLION DOLLARS.

Malaysia new banknote printer reveal

If any of you read news today, you might already know that Malaysia new banknote printer reveal at Dewan Rakyat today. To every Malaysian who still don't know, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will announce a new fourth series of the ringgit banknotes in the near future and already announce Malaysia 3rd series coins on 25 July 2011. BNM decided to issue the the new third series of the Malaysian coins and the fourth series of the ringgit banknotes with improved security features to overcome counterfeiting.

Here are the news reported by Bernama:

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai told the Dewan Rakyat the move would help Bank Negara Malaysia to reduce the cost of producing the new coins by 49% a year through the use of base metals and other technical specifications.
"The appointment of suppliers for the new series of Malaysian coins and banknotes is made through an open tender," he said in response to a question by Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut) who wanted to know the government's rationale in producing the new series of the Malaysian coins and banknotes.
He said all the contracts for the supply of the new series of Malaysian coins and banknotes had been tendered to international companies of high reputation and credibility.
"The supplier which has been selected to supply the coins is Poogsan Corporation, South Korea, and the coins are minted at the Bank Negara Malaysia mint in Shah Alam.
"The suppliers for the new series Malaysian banknotes are Crane AB, Sweden; Giesecke & Devrient GmbH, Germany; Oberthur Technologies, France, and Orell Fussli, Switzerland," Donald added.

Malaysia new banknote printer will be Crane AB, Sweden; Giesecke & Devrient GmbH, Germany; Oberthur Technologies, France, and Orell Fussli, Switzerland. I think that will stop the rumours about Malaysia new banknote turn plastic next year. We hope to hear a good news by early November.

Spirit of Haida Gwaii gold coin

Yestreday, Royal Canadian Mint's has released a ultra-high relief creation, the world's first 10 kilo coin crafted of 99.999% pure gold, Spirit of Haida Gwaii gold coin. The coin has been dedicated to Bill Reid's The Spirit of Haida Gwaii; one of the most celebrated masterpieces of Canadian art. This first-ever Canadian coin to bear a $100,000 face value was unveiled at the Bill Reid Gallery for Northwest Coast Art in Vancouver, British Columbia by Mr. James B. Love, Chair of the Royal Canadian Mint's Board of Directors and Dr. Martine Reid, Ph.D., Director of Research and Content at the Bill Reid Gallery.

The powerful image of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii was captured on the Mint's first 10-kilo gold coin by now retired Mint Master Engraver Cosme Saffioti. Inspired by the imposing scale of Bill Reid's masterpiece, he manually engraved a faithful recreation, using traditional techniques, to an ultra-high relief rarely achieved in the world of coin making. The result is a meticulously detailed sculpture of 99.999% pure gold, honouring the original in a spectacular new form. This extraordinary coin was struck at the Mint's Ottawa facility, using the same 2,500 tonne press from which the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games athlete medals were produced.

No more than 15 of these exclusive coins will be crafted for collectors of both fine art and of the finest gold in the world. Its price is a combination of the gold market rate at the time of purchase, plus a premium for its manufacturing and very limited mintage.

The engraving of Bill Reid's masterpiece appearing on the reverse of this coin is beautifully highlighted in a proof finish, contrasting the sculpture's image in a satin finish set against a brilliant, mirror-like background. The obverse of the coin, also finished in proof quality, features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by portrait artist Susanna Blunt in 2003.

In 1985, Vancouver architect Arthur Erickson commissioned Bill Reid to produce a sculpture for the new Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. The result was The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Black Canoe, which is cast in bronze and represents Reid's largest and most complex sculpture standing almost four metres in height and weighing 4,900 kilos. A second casting, named The Jade Canoe, graces the terminal of the Vancouver International Airport, while the original plaster pattern of the monument is displayed at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec.

The Spirit of Haida Gwaii pure gold coin is the world's first 10-kilo gold coin of 99.999% purity. Its $100,000 face value makes it the world's highest denomination 10-kilo gold coin and highest denomination non-circulation numismatic coin. It is the second-highest denomination coin ever produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which produced a 100-kg gold bullion coin of 99.999% purity at $1,000,000 face value in 2007.

UK 2012 Gold Sovereign

Royal Mint UK has released UK 2012 Gold Sovereign. The 22 Carat Gold coin weight at 7.988 gram will have a maximum Coin Mintage of 8,144 pieces. A new reverse design had been created to celebrate for the 2012 Sovereigns, Only the fourth time that the Sovereign design has changed in the Queen's reign. Th reverse designed by Paul Day, from a number of designs put in front of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee as a result of a design competition including a total of five designers.

The reverse of the 2012 sovereign coin shows a ferocious dragon being despatched by a knight in Gothic armour. The obverse of the new coin will feature the acclaimed portrait of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS that has graced UK coins since 1998.

"I have chosen to opt for a Romantic version of the St George and the dragon theme - a medieval knight of Arthurian legend rather than a classical hero. I have given the dragon a more threatening attitude and size, so that it represents a real menace and not a weak foe," Paul said.

Each Sovereign has been minted to the exact weight and diameter of the first modern Sovereign of 1817. It is housed in a deluxe presentation case and comes with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing the coin’s weight, diameter, gold content and limited edition presentation of just 5,500.

The gold Sovereign is without doubt one of Britain’s most famous coins: a coin so rich in history, it’s considered by many as the flagship coin of the Royal Mint, and synonymous with Britain herself. The traditional St George and dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci is replaced only on special occasions. The Queen’s historic Diamond Jubilee is such an event, so the 2012 Sovereign features a brand new design for one year only. The Royal Mint ran a limited competition, inviting five artists to create a fresh interpretation of St George and the dragon.
