Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent or known as Yves Saint Laurent was born on 1 August 1936 and this year marks the 80th anniversary of the fashion designer’s birth. He is regarded as one of the greatest names in fashion history.

His iconic Mondrian dress collection comprised graphic black lines and blocks of white and primary colour that were inspired by the paintings of Piet Mondrian, a Dutch painter. Rather than being printed, the dresses were made of pre-dyed fabrics, each colour in their design being an individual piece of fabric.

The new coins come in silver and gold, with face values of 5 euros, 10 euros and 50 euros.
