On 23rd April, a $4 1880 Coiled Hair stella gold coin sold for $1,821,250 in Heritage's Platinum Night session at the Central States Numismatic Society convention. The most important Stellas available to collectors and just 10 1880 Coiled Hair stellas are extant.

stella gold

The 1880 Coiled Hair stella is the rarest of the four variants in the series. It was originally issued in three-coin sets along with a goloid dollar and metric dollar, both of which were also designed by George T. Morgan. As mentioned above, only 10 (or fewer) examples are thought to exist from an original mintage that likely totaled between 10 and 20 pieces.

The auction total results exceeding $34.3 million. Another rare stella, the 1879 Coiled Hair in Proof-65 PCGS, sold for $881,250.
