Brazil will issue 2014 World Cup coins

On Friday, Banco Central Do Brasil (Brazil's Central Bank) announced plans to issue a set of nine commemorative coins for the 2014 World Cup. The commemorative coin set will be released on 24 January 2014 and will be have a one gold coin, two in silver and six in an alloy of copper and nickel.

The gold coin weighing 4.4. grams (0.155 ounce) will have a nominal value of 10 reais and will be sold for 1180 reais (USD$504). The coin reverse will represent the Cup trophy and a player scoring a goal on the obverse. Only 5,000 pieces of the 10 reais 2014 World Cup coins will be minted, the bank said.

Those in silver will have a value of five reais (USD$2.2) and a weight of 27 grams. One will represent Fuleco, the 2014 World Cup mascot, and the other the 12 host cities. They will be sold for 190 reais (USD$81) a piece and only 20,000 of each design will be minted.

The six cupronickel versions, each with a value of 2 reais (USD$0.86) and a weight of 10.17 grams, will cost 30 reais (USD$12.8). The cupronickel coins will be part of a series called ‘Football Moves', portraying common plays: the goalkeeper’s defence, a header, a player chesting down the ball, the pass, the dribble and the goal. In addition, from March onwards, a little booklet with the six cupronickel coins will start being sold and only 20,000 copies of each will be minted.

After being released, the coins will be able to be purchased on the Banco do Brasil website (www.bb.com.br) or at the Brazilian Central Bank’s regional offices in Belém, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo.
