Engineer charged for fake US$100

Yesterday, a British Engineer charged in Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for having a total of 4,896 pieces of fake US$100 banknotes.

Billal Ganchi, 46-year-old engineer from Britain was charged with possessing the USD100 notes totalling RM1,591,200 (USD489,600) which were found to be faked.

He claimed trial before judge Mat Ghani Abdullah after the charge was read to him in English on Wednesday.


The offence was alleged to have committed at his house in Seri Lata Condo, Jalan 4/125, Taman Desa Petaling here on Aug 1 at about 4.35pm.

Billal was accused under Section 489C of the Penal Code which provides a maximum of 10 years' jail, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Haderiah Siri applied for a mention date saying that no bail would be offered, as Billal was not a Malaysian citizen.

In pleading for a lower bail, Billal applied for a RM5,000 bail and British High Commission would post the bail.

Judge Mat Ghani then granted bail at RM900,000 in one surety pending mention on Sept 20.

He also ordered Billal to surrender his passport.

Billal was unrepresented.
